Malcolm Margolin, founder of @heydaybooks.com, passed away this morning at 84. He changed my life—his example meant everything to me. I know so many people who feel the same way. He truly made our world a more joyous and beautiful place. I miss him, and I'll be grateful for him forever.

I wish I'd had this book when I was a teenager wanting to learn about the literature of my home state. Working on this with John Freeman was a blast. It's out October 14!
Knopf Editor John Freeman proposes the contours of a contemporary California canon, encompassing 49 West Coast writers and an iconic literary institution in his new book charting the Golden State's 21st-Century literary landscape—out from Heyday this fall.

RIP Jeffrey Runnings. I listened to For Against all the time when I was a teenager. Their music from the 80s is post-punk heaven, but I loved their later and less recognized music too—especially this album.
