Spent a load of summer holidays as a child in the Auvergne. Even with the minimal French I’d picked up as an 11yo, i always noticed the appreciation that I’d tried (often pushed forward by my family).
Been to Italy as an adult and had the same reaction as you. I respect it, but the point stands.
