This rings true to me. One of the reasons why the Soviet Union was so strong in math and physics is that super-talented people in those areas didn't have nearly as many outside options to apply their talents as did comparably talented people in the United States.

Public debate in economics is important! Following a suggestion by Handbook of Labor Economics editors Dustmann & Lemieux, Jose Azar & I added a nuanced discussion of the significance of labor market concentration in our understanding of market power and welfare. #EconSky
In economics, editors, referees, and authors often behave as if a published paper should reflect some kind of authoritative consensus.

As a result, valuable debate happens in secret, and the resulting paper is an opaque compromise with anonymous co-authors called referees.

Read this last year. Highly recommended. The part on behavioral Econ was particularly interesting as someone in the field.

Good write up of Toner-Rogers result on introduction of AI to material science labs leading to increase in productivity, w/ almost all gains going to those who were already most productive

But perhaps most interesting result was buried: the scientists hated the tool 1/2
