Got informed about some sad news. Garfield Minott, a prolific dinosaur modeller, special effects and palaeoartist, recognised for contributions to the description of dinosaur binocular vision, passed away at age of 58.

I'm pretty confident that certain online people are going to be cheering about how they were right all along on Nanotyrannus. Their take will be that they were right all along and their arguments, based on private specimens of uncertain provenance, photos of things without scale bars, and ideas...

My latest for @nytimes.com! For 40 years, paleontologists have grappled over whether a small tyrannosaur — named Nanotyrannus — was its own animal, or simply a teenage T.rex. The debate has been ... contentious. Which is why it's so fun to finally be able to say this:

Folks? Nanotyrannus is real.

Great video by @edgescience.bsky.social I think that the whole Manospondylus gigas situation is a testament as to how flawed the ICZN nomenclature rules are (or at least how they fail to account for certain situations like this one).

With the trailers for both #WalkingWithDinosaurs and #JurassicWorld Rebirth apparently showing swimming Spinosaurus, I thought it might be time to go over why I think these animals were not good swimmers. After all, it's something I've written a fair bit about (with @arctomet.bsky.social) 1/many

New #paleoart for #FossilFriday: battling Borealopelta with deep (instead of "high waisted") armour and pigmentation. There's a scientific rationale behind this #ankylosaur #art, which you can read here, along with viewing the hi-res and WIPs of the painting. www.patreon.com/posts/130274... #sciart

Some new #paleoart to welcome my 1000s of new (bot?) followers: here's Cooksonia, the First Vascularised Plant™ from the Silurian. Contra. classic reconstructions, the stems were probably too narrow for photosynthetic pigments, which were instead located in gametophytes at the plant base. #sciart

Ankylosaurus charge - Wayne Barlowe

From the book - Alphabet of Dinosaurs. This organization of osteoderms was the prevailing hypothesis for Ankylosaurus until 2003, when a group of scientists re-evaluated the evidence based on the then large amount of new data from new relatives.
