The Erik Castrén Institute (ECI), housed at the University of Helsinki Faculty of Law, promotes research on public international law, transnational and European law and human rights from broad, heterodox and critical perspectives.
Kicking off our #HelsinkiSummerSeminar speaker series: Dorothée Cambou (@helsinki.fi), whose talk “Indigenous Peoples and Business: Rights, Responsibilities, and Resistance” brings a fresh and thoughtful perspective to the discussion on the public/private divide. #HSS36 #PublicPrivateDivide

The post "Legal Pluralism in Practice?" by ECI researchers Sebastian Machado and Paolo Amorosa is now published on @voelkerrechtsblog.org. Focusing on Colombia, they explore how different legal orders interact in practice.
Sebastian Machado Ramírez and Paolo Amorosa explain Colombia’s Decree 488, showing how a closer look reveals more administrative formality than legal transformation, leaving deep tensions between legal pluralism and human rights protections unresolved.

Professori Päivi Leino-Sandbergin johtamassa monitieteisessä (In)Security and Democracy -hankkeessa tutkitaan, miten demokraattiset yhteiskunnat voivat säilyä avoimina ja moniarvoisina tilanteessa, jossa pelon politiikka hallitsee julkista keskustelua yhä vahvemmin.

(In)Security and Democracy, a multidisciplinary research project led by Professor Päivi Leino-Sandberg, sets out to explore a fundamental question: How can democratic societies remain open, deliberative, and pluralist when the politics of fear increasingly dominate public discourse?
In the “Securitization and Democracy” thematic call we awarded funding to eight projects that increase our understanding of how securitization affects the realisation of fundamental and human rights, access to information, and our ideas of the future. Read more about the funding on our website:

Next week, EU judges will rule on the Pfizergate scandal: did the secret texts between von der Leyen and Pfizer’s CEO vanish, or were they never meant to be seen? We spoke to legal scholar Päivi Leino-Sandberg: for her, this case is about more than texts. It’s a battle for transparency.
