Think this is a solid move from the Marlins perspective and a nice swing for the Yankees

Did the Royals know they were moving in and shortening the fences when they gave Lugo 2/$46MM?

Good defensive CF with options, not surprised he got picked up by a contender. Feels like the type of depth we might be looking at in September and thinking “hmm, wish we had someone like that”

The Cubs have claimed OF Justin Dean, per the Giants.

A couple FWIW tea leaf reads:

1) Passan’s not the Bob or Heyman type of “tweet it if you hear it.” Higher bar, and they’ve been reported to seek a 2B all offseason.

2) They haven’t been mentioned in Donovan talks in several weeks before now.
The San Francisco Giants are aggressively pursuing a second baseman and have been engaged with Chicago on Nico Hoerner and St. Louis on Brendan Donovan, sources tell ESPN. An infield of Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, Donovan or Hoerner and Rafael Devers would be among MLB's best.

Is anyone going to grab MJ Melendez on a MiLB deal?

The Cubs likely won't trade Hoerner if all the post-Bregman press is any indication. But, there is legit rationale behind them trading a 29 year old noodle bat in his walk year. Besides Horton they only have two optionable SP on their 40-man. Their farm is ranked poorly. Less than $1MM below CBT.

This keeps popping up in SF-based reporting. Hoerner is entering his FA year, so it makes sense that the Cubs would float him and see what’s out there. But unless they sign Bregman/Bichette, why would they move him?

Haase was in Cleveland's system for a while, got a chance with Detroit and was a pretty solid backup catcher for a couple years. Production cratered in 2023 and he's barely played the last two years. Hits lefties, significant contact issues, poor defender. Probably nothing more than AAA depth.

I'm not sure why Detroit would counter at that? It's below the record contract for an arb eligible pitcher. Good luck trying to convince the arbitrator that the back-to-back Cy Young winner isn't deserving of a record figure
@JeffPassan tweeted
Two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal filed for a $32 million salary this year while the Detroit Tigers countered at $19 million, sources tell ESPN. The $13 million spread is by far the largest in salary-arbitration history and sets up for a fascinating hearing in February.

Giants OF depth is now down to Matos, Encarnacion, Gilbert, and McCray. Only the latter two can be optioned.

They also only have one non-40 OF who could realistically start the season on the AAA roster, Turner Hill. Davidson and Bandura each have < 200 AA PA.

Robbie Ray from 2016-2022 was 8th in MLB with 1068.1 IP and 3rd in MLB with 192 games started. He threw 182.1 IP in his first full season back from TJS. Not sure how many people realize he's a quite reliable as a workhorse, and only had two sub-100 ERA+ seasons in there (16, 20).

I didn’t want to say it the other day because it wasn’t relevant to the larger point but Luis Matos was hitting .108/.132/.123 in 68 winter league PA. If he had like a .600 OPS, whatever, but that. Yikes
