Personal news: I stepped away from academia on May 1 to work full time on Instagrain - our field camera that uses ML to instantly determine sed. grain size distributions. If you are interested in talking about the Instagrain camera (or about edge ML for envt. monitoring), please reach out!

We (Dylan McNamara, @ebgoldstein.bsky.social & I) were recently motivated to ruminate on & write about this a few houses ago:

A gift that keeps on giving, this one.
Hillslopes, rivers, plows, and trucks: mass transport on Earth's surface by natural and technological processes

Out today: "Rapid seaward expansion of seaport footprints worldwide"

doi.org/10.1038/s432...

Big seaports are getting bigger, which opens a lot of complicated questions.

We had a super constructive review process, thanks to two reviewers & an AE who stuck with us and made the work better.
Rapid seaward expansion of seaport footprints worldwide - Communications Earth & Environment
Large container seaports have expanded seaward rapidly since 1990 through coastal land reclamation, but the relationship between expansion and container throughput volume varies by the individual port...

Re: "pick advisor not school" - this is traditional advice, lots of truth to it.

But for academics advising UGs, does your view change w studies like link, which argue that there are real hiring prefs based on dept?

Hard to disentangle from advisor influence, but wonder how this has been received.
