E2I2 joins organizations across the country in emphasizing that removing the legal obligation for federal actions against greenhouse gas emissions will have adverse, long-term impacts on public health and quality of life, and intervention to protect communities is needed, now.

The EPA 2009 “endangerment finding” has been officially repealed. If left unchallenged, this removes federal obligation to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and will dismantle critical legal frameworks that support national environmental and climate programs against carbon emissions, and drastically reduce public accountability against industrial polluters. Publicly available environmental data overwhelmingly support the lived realities of our community partners: greenhouse gas emissions from burning and extracting fossil fuels impose compounding costs of healthcare, electricity, insurance, and food, increase socioeconomic inequities, and degrade our natural environment The Environmental Equity Information Institute joins other environmental, health, and climate justice organizations across the country in urging greater investment in building the capacity of environmental justice communities to understand and respond to toxic pollution challenges. Environmental data in community hands cannot be hidden, erased, or censored. Alternative data systems ensure that federal cuts and rollbacks do not erase decades of environmental progress in communities that share the highest pollution and climate burden. When people understand what is in their air, water, and soil, they gain the power to protect it. Data infrastructure, when designed with community needs in mind, reduces existing disparities in information access and encourages active participation in environmental decision-making. Our air monitoring program puts customized equipment in areas overlooked by state and federal agencies, and trains communities how to utilize air quality data.

In 2024, the BioLab Chemical fire sent toxic plumes of chlorine and hydrochloric acid across Conyers, GA. Residents reported exposure to chlorine over 20 miles away from the site of the accident. We’re partnering with leaders across the South to enhance community response to environmental hazards, pollution threats, and emergencies like chemical accidents. Visit e2i2.org to learn more. At e2i2.org, we independently collect, and simplify, air pollution data for communities at risk of hazardous environmental exposure.

Our work addresses the difficulty in sourcing and interpreting scientific data for grassroots efforts against environmental challenges across the South.
Federal rollbacks on air emissions standards will increase environmental health disparities.
