Bob Dylan was incredible tonight in Brighton. In my opinion he and the band were better than last year in London. And that's despite not being able to see him this time.

Bob Dylan at the Brighton Centre was truly lovely. It’s hard to create at atmosphere in a crappy aircraft hanger venue, but the lack of anything to see meant I found myself listening with my eyes shut for most of the set - accompanied by the most divine onstage chemistry.

Noticing Dylan's Outlaw '25 sets had two covers, one called "I Can Tell" and another containing the line, "You can't always tell" (Axe and the Wind).

Both real highlights for me of these shows, somewhat surprisingly.

Surprise! The first Bob Dylan soundboards in 16 years. The Outlaw Tour has never sounded better.

🎵 Come senators, congressman, please heed the call, this song ain't political, it's 'bout nothin' at all 🎵

"Universal Music Publishing Group, which owns Dylan's song catalog, says it has a "longstanding policy" of keeping his compositions out of political projects"

Well, it's lonesome travelin' down that lonesome road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice 'cos it's alright

While not exactly groundbreaking here, Bob's been pretty loose with lyrics recently, doing some light improv

Bob Dylan: “Did you like that one?”
John Hammond: “Sure, it’s alright. Who wrote that?”
Bob: “I don’t know. I don’t know who wrote that.”
John: “Has it been recorded?”
Bob: “Not that way.”
John: “How has it been recorded?”
Bob: “A different way I guess.”

After playing it again at Dave Whitaker’s home a few months later, Dylan also left the song behind for a long time.

But in 2015, he was captured (from across a lake) playing Deep Elem Blues during a soundcheck before a concert in Germany.

The significant Gerde's debut is, of course, Blowin’ in the Wind.

Dylan introduces the song, saying: “This here…it ain’t a protest song cos I don’t write protest songs. It’s just something to be said by somebody for somebody.”

He’ll record Honey in the studio a few months later, in a more settled but still energetic performance.

Plus, make one lyrical improvement when “looking for someone who’ll understand” becomes the funnier “looking for a woman who needs a worried man”.
