Still working through this slim volume (5 stories and an essay). I have to say, Amis is hitting me as a LOT of style over I'm-not-sure-how-much substance thus far. I'll plough on. Also, FYI, the stories are not "about" nuclear war, but it's a deep, running theme.

Laying into some short fiction next: Einstein’s Monsters by Martin Amis from 1987 (Penguin edition from 1988). The five stories here are all about nuclear war, a big deal at the time and maybe soon to be a big deal again.

A lot of modern Americans wouldn't get the point that Carroll O'Connor makes about Archie Bunker's bigotry here: youtu.be/5j4gjse35C8?...

I've gotten to the part in Stargate Atlantis where Miles O'Brien has a secret underground bunker full of nuclear weapons.

If you think it gets dark early now, know that there are 38 more days till the solstice, on all of which it will get dark earlier than it does today, then 38 MORE days following the solstice until we get to a day where it gets dark around the same time as today. That’s 76 darker days than today.

I’m awake, kinda. Sooshi’s already been out in the back yard. She kept getting excited, thinking the falling leaves were birds.

Watched this tonight: William Friedkin's Sorcerer from 1977 (with Roy Scheider, two years after Jaws and a year after Marathon Man). It wasn't a success at the time but has come to be recognized by some as a masterpiece. I thought it was great.

Since we're all talking about it, here's my #BondJamesBond hot take.
They should remake the films in the order they were written, as period pieces, very faithful to the books. Tone down the misogyny and racism but otherwise include all of it, especially the food/clothes stuff. Then we can...

Born 11 November 1925, actress June Whitfield. Amongst many other roles, she starred opposite Terry Scott in "Terry & June", a BBC sitcom that ran from 1974 to 1979. It regularly pulled in more than 10 million viewers. June died, aged 92 in 2018. She would've been 100 today! #JuneWhitfield
