Composer, Student union advocate, Disability competence standards boffin,
Eventually decomposer.
Fun time at NADP conference today. Highlights should be all of the excellent speakers throughout the day, but I just can't get over how good the tiramisu at lunch was. So nice on a hot day.

John Blake from Office for Students is pointing out that we can’t make reasonable adjustments if we don’t know what and why we are assessing #CompetenceStandards #DSC

Lots of thoughts today - and only some of the intelligible.

At the very bottom of the competence standards hypothetical rabbit hole, is the reason we struggle because degrees are inherently an arbitrary concept?
An Award in experts reasonably agree you're proven knowledgeable on bits of a subject?

I recognise those!
Glad my late night brain storm helped the sector somehow.

Delving back into the minutiae of competence standards again, and I feel we really need a different noun for this term, just to stop it being mixed up with competence, competency, competencies and other Symantec trappings.
Causes so much needless head scratching.

Been watching rivals on Disney+
I think it's one of the best written dyslexic character portrayals I've seen.
They're a full developed person, with skills and interest, but I'm every scene of spoken dialogue, or even the occasional stutter. You can feel the language barrier.
Super well done!

Excellent article: "[the High Court judge] argued that once it had agreed them, the university had separate contractual and tortious duties to implement the recommendations, irrespective of whether those recommendations aligned with the reasonable adjustments duty under the Equality Act.
NEW on Wonkhe: A High Court ruling could have significant implications for disabled students seeking reasonable adjustments from their university. Jim Dickinson gets across the detail https://buff.ly/40KwtjH

Now that @disabledstudentsuk.bsky.social have joined the party, I've added them to my little starter pack of accounts connected to disability in HE, disabled students, disabled staff, and disability practitioners in HE. Always open to more people, so post if you want adding!

Delightful to see my final train both cancelled, and then un-cancelled in the time it took me to arrive at the connecting station.
Only a little panic.

In preparation for a misogyny in music study day, I've been chatting with a bunch of SUs. I completely forgot the role larger SUs can play in helping combat misogyny in music societies. gender imbalance in orchestras and choirs can require a lot of work to effectively challenge.

Ok so I've put together a (currently small) starter pack of people with an interest/investment in #disability in #UKHE, including disabled students and staff. Tied my brain in knots about adding people without consent, so please please let me know if you want adding! go.bsky.app/SzRGzk4
