When did I forget
I’m happiest
with a tune in my ears,
words before my eyes,
and a coffee
or a beer
on my lips.
When did I trade that
for noise,
for hurry,
for the belief that joy
had to be earned
rather than noticed.
Music still waits.

"Two of life's greatest pleasures, by my reckoning, are camping and reading - most gloriously, both at once."

Love this.

Tyre puncture repair today at Kwik Fit. Not our local one, which was fully booked, but the Hall Green branch. The repair was routine. The service wasn’t.

"David is a reflective, principled, slightly wary leader who writes to stay honest, who knows power is real, who does not want to be owned by it, and who is quietly preparing for a life beyond the role even while still taking the role seriously."

I have been writing a lot and posting it here. You’ve noticed. My daughter’s friends have noticed too (sorry Emi). I enjoy writing and have recently reconnected with that love.

It's John Carpenter's birthday. A genre stalwart it's no easy pick choosing a favourite film. His remake of The Thing, Escape from New York (and LA), They Live, Prince of Darkness, Halloween, The Fog... All classics

It’s Friday. Productivity is now ceremonial and mostly involves pretending emails can wait until Monday.

Cultivating a more measured leadership style has been a multi-year project of mine. If I’m honest, I’m still very much in the 'work-in-progress' phase. Some days the 'old me' still tries to run the meeting.

Thread 🧵 1/5 Lead like Batman. Not because he is powerful, but because he is deliberate. He prepares, pays attention, and turns up ready. He is not chasing applause, just results.

Most of us want to be understood. Not agreed with. Just properly seen in our thinking and intent. When we are misunderstood, the work is clear. Clarify. Rephrase. Listen harder. But there is a harder moment. When you are understood and the answer is still no.

I went to the pantomime today and, inevitably, the actors picked me out for the audience participation bit.
Phrases to shout. Dances to repeat. Being called back to do it again and again.
Deeply embarrassing.

I’m finding, in my context as an executive headteacher, very little truly scales.
I support two different schools and now realise how few things fit both.
What works well in one can land awkwardly in the other.
Pupils, staff culture, history, and needs are different.
