truth!
Reminder to students: if you are enjoying a professor’s class or particular things about the way they teach, TELL THEM. I got some lovely unsolicited feedback from an undergrad today & I do not exaggerate when I say this will sustain me for weeks. #HigherEd #Academia

I’m giddy!
It may be frigid in the Valley, but it's always warm in the FLC.
In honor of libraries everywhere get ready for #2026MMM by playing the game before the game! Check the McKinney #bcvaMMM board or official MMM sites (link in bio) for regular clues to upcoming combatants.

Myiarchus flycatchers ordered by size and intensity of yellow underparts. When it comes to flycatchers, differences between species tend to be very subtle. Impressions of size and color in the field can be quite subjective, but the differences are real.

And still, we light.

We light because we understand something essential: that the act of kindling flame in the face of those who would extinguish us is itself holy resistance. That refusing to disappear is a form of prayer.

Happy Hanukkah to our friends who celebrate. Rachel Posner, a rabbi’s wife in Kiel, Germany, took this photograph in 1931 -- a potent reminder that fascism must be fought in every generation, even if it's wrapped in an American flag and a red hat.

The cruelty seems to be their point.
SNAP helped me during a difficult transition period between my PhD/PostDoc and first full time job that included several moves. Knowing I could feed my wee boys nutritious food was a relief during a very stressful few years. I’m thrilled that it helps others in our inequitable society

it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions

"Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"

“Science thrives on openness to new evidence. But that openness isn’t a license to ignore consensus or amplify fringe claims. The burden of proof lies with challengers, not the scientific mainstream.”

Great thread to consider for my non-majors env sci course.
“Science is never settled” sounds reasonable—but it’s often a rhetorical trick to undermine consensus on issues like vaccines or climate change.
Science evolves, but some things are overwhelmingly supported by evidence.
