I often use my sister with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering as a translator to understand technical staff and engineers of companies that build equipment for me. Now, she told me I would get a book with diagrams and graphics about engineering as a birthday present, so I don't need her anymore. 😅

Today I explained my MSc student a bit how appointment procedures for professorships work in different European countries and her conclusion was: "Academia is a big circus" 🎪. I replied that this was indeed what the PhD student with whom I shared an office during my PhD said about Academia 😅.

After being relatively efficient this morning, this afternoon is a nightmare. I'm correcting and revising a draft of my student's report and my laptop crashes almost every 5-10 min for the last 1.5 hours. I have even split the report in 2 parts, so that the laptop can better cope with it 😮‍💨.

My latest for @science.org—a major European effort to understand the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining begins this year. It aims to answer major open questions as the ISA finalizes regulations.
As deep-sea mining race ramps up, mission will assess whether ecosystems recover afterward
A new series of research cruises will study rare abyssal species in areas slated for mining

I have to give a lecture in German at a 🇩🇪 university in 2.5 weeks, so I had a funny conversation with colleagues: 3 German scientists living abroad for years tried to identify the most gender-inclusive German term for 'university students' that didn't exist when we all left the country years ago.

In 2020 I conducted a seasonal experiment at the tidal flat behind #NIOZ-Yerseke 🇳🇱. Over the years, a small Pacific oyster 🦪bed/ reef was established which I used as experimental site for my metabolic activity studies of macrobenthos. 1/n

Today, I‘m presenting about #deepseamining and #polymetallicnodules at the Faculty of Engineering at @unipaderborn.bsky.social.

Last week and this week, I'm traveling a lot for purchasing field and lab equipment for my new #ERCStG group #SPYCLING, which will also benefit my current project, and to present my research on #deepseamining at @unipaderborn.bsky.social 🇩🇪 tomorrow (busy preparing the talk right now). 1/2

Today I exchanged my office in the North of 🇳🇱 with one in the South of 🇳🇱, as I‘m burrowing some equipment and discuss a new cooperation.

Why do we see so few squid in the abyss? Because they hide from us, pretending to be sponges!🦑 New paper by @alemejiasaenz.bsky.social captures a potential new whiplash-squid species that burrows between nodules at the #CCZ, world's largest region targeted for #deepseamining doi.org/10.1002/ecy....

Setting up your own lab (while still working on other projects in parallel) is like Christmas shopping on a 'grand scale'. Today it's all about O2 sensors (until other duties call again). #NewPI #ERCStG

Yesterday, I visited the Department of Earth Sciences at @vuamsterdam.bsky.social in #Amsterdam 🇳🇱 to give a talk as part of the BETA Lectures Earth Sciences. Thanks 🙏 to @nielsjdewinter.bsky.social for organizing the Theme 1 seminar series.

When a colleague sends out a reminder about a talk I'm giving tomorrow, while the presentation doesn't even exist yet. 😂😶‍🌫️

For weeks I've been busy with comparing quotes of GC-EA-IRMS systems and preparing the tender. After I've sent the 4th request for adjustments of the quote, the sales manager of one of companies likely thinks I'm completely crazy. 🫣

My colleague with whom I share an office coined a new term "hyperactive e-mail postbox". And it's so true. I had to respond to a rather (too) long e-mail and while doing so, every few minutes a new e-mail came in that needed attention and urgent actions until the end of the day. 🫣

I still write the performance description, technical specification, and product comparison for the purchase of the GC/EA-IRMS. Whenever I believe the first document is finally completed and technically correct, I find a new mistake. 1/2

There are really 2 groups of university students: Group A) contacts potential supervisors for internships/ placement years 1 year or more in advance, group B) contacts potential supervisors for an obligatory 7 months internship 14 days in advance. 🫣

Task for today, preparing the purchase of a new GC/EA-IRMS for my #ERCStG project #SPYCLING, worth about 450,000 💶 (~520,000 💵).

I participate in the #ArtScienceMatchmaking initiative of the @dsbsoc.bsky.social. If you are more interested in my art than in my science (or both), you can check my progress here: www.instagram.com/tanjastratma.... The final piece will include #sponges & plants in a surrealistic setting. #SciArt
