A case could be made that Rob Reiner helped save the planet! In 1974 his character on All in the Family (the #1 show at the time) passionately tells his wife how spray cans are destroying the ozone layer, and this episode is credited with helping turn the tide on efforts to ban CFC's. #robreiner

I ask this in the name of my father (a civil engineer) who passed this torch down for me to carry. Plus it's just such a common mistake, and always jolts me out of the story I'm reading...

A request to all writers and editors (esp. SciFi)... please stop using the word CEMENT when you really mean CONCRETE (or PAVEMENT). Cement is just one of the ingredients in concrete - it is a powder made from lime and clay minerals that becomes adhesive when mixed with water. #scifi #booksky

Whack-a-mole w/ @nytimes.com new & opposite-of-improved app. May have fixed glacial load time, but side-swipe problem is worse. Before, when barely-non-vertical scrolling triggered a sideways section switch, u could just swipe back over to your original place. Now it puts u way back at the top!

And not just for federal relations and public relations, but also for ourselves. Tired of being a "subdivision" or "section" of some other field. And spent most of my academic career in departments whose name seemed to almost deliberately omit my chosen field ("Earth and Space Sciences")

Agree 100%. I've long felt that Planetary Science needs to establish its own identity as a field of science distinct from Astronomy and Geoscience and having our own separate professional organization would be a big first step.

Totally baffled by AI hype. In recent article by @kevinroose.com in @nytimes.com:"smartest humans are struggling to create tests that AI's can't pass".

I have yet to see an AI that can even pass this test "List all of the three-letter words in your last response"!

When A.I. Passes This Test, Look Out
The creators of a new test called “Humanity’s Last Exam” argue we may soon lose the ability to create tests hard enough for A.I. models.

WTF #NFL? just saw on @theverge.com that they're making teams stop using Bluesky because of a "deal" they have with X?! What exactly do they get out of this deal? Free use of a free app?
Extra irksome to me since the Seahawks just started following me!

Rewatching GOT, love the scenes between Arya and Tywin at Harrenhall. Always wish Tywin found out before he died that his cupbearer had been Arya Stark! Or did he find out in the books? (Haven't read them all yet...)

yes, i agree it's important to take every opportunity to help ss distinguish between variables and units. esp problematic is "m" as it's used for both (mass & meters). I've adopted (and teach) the practice of always writing unit symbols in square brackets to make it unambiguous.

why does the "Discover" feed include so many posts from people I already follow?

Is there some rule in writing book reviews to not mention other relevant books? Just read Dwight Garner's review of the new book on #REM by Carlin in #NYT and even when describing what it doesn't cover he never mentions other REM bio books that do. I've noticed this is other book reviews too...

Also noticing new things - both gems and goofs:
-In S7E3 as Jon is escorted up to meet Darnerys, the dragon flies over them right after he tells Tyrion "But I'm not Stark".

Rewatching #GameofThrones (a 3rd time) and have decided that the greatest thing about it is the DIALOGUE. It's like poetry - lyrical and terse but packed with meaning - yet always sounds natural (unlike, say #RingsofPower).

an apropos quote from Fredric Jameson: "It seems to be easier for us today to imagine the thoroughgoing deterioration of the earth and of nature than the breakdown of late capitalism,” he wrote in “The Seeds of Time” (1994). “Perhaps that is due to some weakness in our imaginations.”
