Why is labor power essential to democracy?

For week 2 of our @npquarterly.bsky.social Third Reconstruction series, @darrickhamilton.bsky.social & @dorianwarren.bsky.social look at U.S. history.

Read why the path out of authoritarianism runs through a multiracial labor movement: demos.nyc/43lmRwx

To build the democracy we never had, activating people power—animated by an inclusive vision for our economy, especially through labor unions—is essential.

🔥 Launching today: A 6-week series with @npquarterly.bsky.social on building a Third Reconstruction. Read about how we defeat authoritarianism and build a multiracial democracy—even when the odds seem impossible.

First, @drpenieljoseph.bsky.social on the path forward: demos.nyc/3JuC8Va
Why the Struggle for a Third Reconstruction Remains the Struggle for Our Times - Non Profit News | Nonprofit Quarterly
At a time of racial justice backlash, a call for a full-throated multiracial democracy may seem audacious—it’s also a necessary movement to preserve US democracy at all.

Historian @drpenieljoseph.bsky.social says coalition-building is as vital to the fight for civil rights today as it was in 1963.
At a #JFKForum, he reflects on President Kennedy’s June 11 Address on Civil Rights as a call for Americans across the nation to join together in pursuit of racial justice.

Shoutout to @drpenieljoseph.bsky.social on the biography of Stokely Carmichael and the Black Power movement
This man right here!!

Should be celebrating his 84th birthday today.

Whenever we speak of the Greats like Malcolm or Martin, or even John Lewis, his name should be right there too.

Unfortunately he died of prostate cancer in 1998, but he was one of them ones! ✊🏾
