(again i don't have dyslexia.. i just saw a poster/ad for catching dyslexia early because reading is important, and sure it is, but the fact we can do this at all feels like a huge accident)

dyslexia is kind of surreal - like, not as a person who has it, but the concept of a person who when they look at a bunch of small objects sometimes they get the order of their particular spatial arrangement incorrect, and--that's it.

strange we built a world where this ability matters so much???

I just got my author's copy of The Impossible Reversal from @uminnpress.bsky.social and it looks absolutely gorgeous! My deep thanks go out to Jason Weidemann and the rest of the editorial team who shepherded the manuscript into being!

You can pre-order it now from the press or bookshop.org

magnitude-wise, i mean

you got about 200 likes on this one, we really are in the middle era

i agree!!! i mean i agree with your disagreement! to some degree!

i'm very interested in games where the '''rules''' only exist in a raw mental state, the same way sheet-music-less music exists without annotation?

possibly related tangent:

oh and on top of understanding, rules are also a technology for conveying/transmitting systems! i have a system; here are the rules, you can reproduce the system for yourself using these rules.

i think that's really the thing i'm butting up against myself! which, in our world of words, may be insignificant.

i've been thinking about skelet machines on and off. "C1L E1L H1L D1L D1R D0L A1L E1R B0L C0R" describes a whole turing machine system (in a certain language, let's say). i think rules are descriptions, models, views. they are our annotations for understanding systems.

๐Ÿ˜… yeaaahhh it is very existential and "what are words" when we get down to it like this hahaha

nooo it's not what the audience thinks it is, it's what is transmitted to the audience, which they get an incomplete picture of and form opinions/thoughts about

but mistaking a useful map for the real thing which it helps us navigate leads to an inability to successfully diagnose moments when the map fails

i'm not saying that the 'material object' is a single experience or a running of the code, i think the material object is often a vastly huge hyper-dimensional possibility space, which is why it's easier to talk about things on both ends of simplifying it: the rules, or a single experience
February 4, 2026 at 3:08 PM
i'm not sure whether this is just a semantics thing or what! i agree with everything you're saying, i just think there's some in-between object that is closer (than rules) to the material which a person, including the artist, actually regards.
February 4, 2026 at 3:07 PM
arghh yeah 'systems' keep coming up and hitting the right way for me so i think i'm gradually allowing that word in for the thing i'm trying to describe

the rules of the game are sheet music, maybe
