Relational approaches are not about being a pupils best friend but the small everyday moments. Connection. Sincere compliments.Acts of kindness. Genuine check-in. Showing up in ways that matter. Remembering the little details. These moments are powerful & therapeutic. 🧠🌱

Trauma shapes the brain, but so does recovery. With the right support, safety & connection, the nervous system can heal, regulation can be learned, triggers can lose intensity& connection can create new patterns of safety. Healing happens in relationships, in self-compassion & in small steps forward

🧵1/7 Following on from yesterday’s post, adoptive parents often carry an invisible weight, managing trauma, advocating for support, and constantly adjusting to meet their child’s needs. But I wanted to add that when the system fails, that weight doesn’t just disappear.

Last week my MA Education: SEND students were encouraged to contribute to an online discussion to explore the question

Why does the prevalence of our children and young people's SEMH needs appear to continually rise?

Looking forward to collaboratively engaging with their responses

Thank you so much.

Really appreciate you taking the time to listen.

Like you, I really do think teachers need time and space to talk together about the emotional aspects of the work.

Thanks again!

Such a worthwhile listen & correlates with what we're seeing in schools & feedback from senior leaders who've engaged with us.

Educators need nonjudgmental, compassionate spaces for reflection to point back to their intrinsic capacity to flourish, when they reconnect with themselves & others.

Hope to catch up again soon.

Sometimes we might find ourselves in opposition to the system..yet the system is made of people & within people is an inherent capacity for change. It may take courage, insight & a generosity of spirit, but it is entirely possible to reimagine a system.

✅The government should pursue its priority of developing a cross-government strategy to reduce child poverty, as deprivation is closely linked to SEND.

✅The National Curriculum Review should consider introducing national PSED assessments in early Key Stage 2 and early secondary school.
