Brilliant chairing from Maxine Looby
"We’re in tough times, but it’s our wins and successes that give us the grit to continue when employers double down on us"

UCU President Maxine Looby @mybool.bsky.social‬ opening Congress 2025.

From local victories to national breakthroughs this union keeps showing up and fighting back.

Edinburgh University UCU members back strike action over £140m cuts.

The university has refused to rule out compulsory job cuts.

This is the largest cuts programme in Scottish HE history.

We must resist.

“At UEA, it is understood that 22 staff are earning more than £150k and 4 staff are on £205k. At a time when university managers are pushing through large-scale job cuts, this is frankly obscene”

If Cardiff Met continue with proposed compulsory redundancies, they will be the first university to cross the line.

UCU a say NO to compulsory redundancies.

If universities employ characters like this, what do they expect? There is a desperate shortage of principled, competent leaders in HE.

Cardiff Met UCU has requested that Cardiff Met re open their voluntary severance programme or, if necessary, a voluntary redundancy programme across the whole university. Universities should not be choosing to use compulsory redundancy.

Can the Welsh Government save Higher Education? Not on its own.
Wales needs Members of the Senedd who have the critical insight that enables them to understand the challenges facing all sectors and make strategic choices.
Just as importantly, they need the passion to stand up for Wales. ✍️Martin Shipton

Bloated institutions that have forgotten the real purpose of a university- says so here 👇🏻
In the case of Cardiff, I have seen shock and dismay at the decisions to cut music and nursing. It seems perverse to cut music in the land of song and nursing when we have a crisis in the health sector due to lack of nurses✍️ Cinzia Yates

I can’t believe people still visit places where animals are exploited. Such optimistic naivety on my part.
