Introductory post. I'm a researcher and mother of multitudes (no really!). My original degree was archaeology then later I did an MA in social research and PhD in Sociology. I research recovering from childhood sexual abuse (CSA) both now and in the past. My posts aren't always grim!
If you're in the UK and trying to go anywhere by train today...don't. I had 2 trains to catch today. First one was cancelled, second one tree fell on the line.

I have been trying to trace the parents of an exploited girl from 1885. She was born in Dublin and I had some info thanks to @salvarmyarchive.bsky.social I was just about to give up, as the Irish records are so patchy, when I had a breakthrough! Both #researchthrills and #sadstory. #academicsky

Her adoptive dad had sexually assaulted her for years. But when Taylor Cadle told police, she was treated like a “monster.” She was charged with lying to the police and had to write an apology letter to her abuser.

Justice finally came when Taylor took her phone and hit record.
Police didn’t believe a 12-year-old who said she'd been raped. Then she hit record.

Super interesting talk by @carolinederry.bsky.social and @drcisme.bsky.social last night complemented by items from Josephine Butler archive. The parallels with what's going on today were striking.
We were exploring the events of 1885, when a series of scandals led to changes in sexual offences law. The Women's Library at @lselibrary.bsky.social has lots of relevant archival material, some of which was on display 😍

Interesting! What on earth is going on? Politics again presumably. As usual I wish victims/survivors weren't politically exploited.
Breaking - Five grooming gang survivors tell PM they will stay on panel only if Jess Phillips REMAINS in post.

They say Phillips has “devoted her life to hearing and amplifying the voices of women and girls who would have otherwise been unheard”.

Writing about the murder of a child is hard because you don't want to use the old tropes, it does need to be included in my book and, on a personal level, it breaks my heart.

I'm writing a book about a woman who procured early teenage girls for rich men, including politicians and princes. It's a true story. It happened back in 1885 and I'm constantly surprised by how little has changed. The book tells the girls story, people with hopes and fears just like you. 1/2

OMG all of this.

Bit late but just watched the first episode of #humans on the BBC and it's amazing how much it's all changed since I did my archaeology and prehistory degree back in the early 90's.

I have autistic kids and you know what - they are utterly perfect - exactly who they are supposed to be - just like trans and non-binary people. Diversity and difference is a good thing. When did we turn away from just letting people be? Why did we move away from celebrating difference?

Am continuing the musical education of my teenage triplets. Last week I was playing The Who and telling them about Keith Moon blowing up toilets. Today it was Folsom Prison Blues and one of the best lyrics ever 'I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.' Perhaps I should lighten it up a bit.
