The Climate Consensus Speaker: Dr. Carlos Nobre Earth System Scientist The Amazon Near a Tipping Point. The Urgent Need of Nature-Based Solutions. The Amazon rainforest, often called the "lungs of the planet," is nearing critical tipping points where irreversible damage could occur, such as deforestation disrupting the water cycle, rising temperatures converting forests to savannas, and biodiversity loss. Urgent action is required to avoid severe short-term consequences like accelerated climate change, extreme weather, and social impacts on local communities, as well as long-term global crises including economic disruption and loss of biodiversity. Collaboration is essential, starting with strong policy enforcement, sustainable business practices, and empowering Indigenous communities. Innovation and investment in technologies and sustainable ventures can also drive progress. These strategies not only help protect the Amazon but also open opportunities for forest restoration, eco-tourism, socio-bioeconomies of healthy standing forests and flowing rivers, carbon markets, science-technology and innovations hubs, and others, to foster a sustainable and prosperous future for humanity and nature alike. Nobre is a brazilian scientist specialized in Earth Systems who has dedicated his scientific career mainly to the Amazon and climate science. He is currently a principal researcher at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo, creator of the Amazonia Third Way-Amazonia 4.0 initiative and Co-chair of the Science Panel for the Amazon. He was a Program Scientist for the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in the Amazon. He was one of the authors of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Almost 34 years ago he proposed the hypothesis of the "savannization" of the Amazon as a response to deforestation. He was National Secretary of R&D of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Brazil and member of the High-Level Scientific Advisory Group on Global Sustainability of the United Nations. He is also a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society, and the first Brazilian to be a member of Planetary Guardians.

After a record-breaking melt season for sea ice, the Canadian #Arctic basin has finally completed its freeze-up.

Line graph time series showing daily Arctic sea ice extent in the Canadian Arctic for 2024 compared to each year from 1979 to 2023. There is a large seasonal cycle on this graph and a long-term decreasing trend for days during the melt season from May to November. 2024 is the lowest on record for this time of year.
