The British Columbia portion of Highway 3, also known as Crowsnest Highway, offers one hidden gem after another—from small town charm to hiking, camping, and canoeing.

I've spent most of the last little while in journalist mode, chasing down people to interview for a couple of stories I'm working on.

I always kind of forget how much I enjoy connecting with people about their passions. Really can't wait to see these articles in print.

The white-crowned sparrows are back! These are my absolute favourite seasonal visitors. I wished they stayed longer.

It's day two of chainsaws and wood chippers 🥳🥳😫

Chainsaws and other loud power tools are the natural enemy of the freelancer.

Thank the gods for noise canceling headphones.

Working with actual editors after nearly a decade of working with mostly content managers is such a breath of fresh air.

I've got a great blend of editorial and marketing work at the moment.

I'm telling stories I've been wanting to tell for years, which is so exciting.

I introduced my 10 year old to They Might Be Giants yesterday.

Her comments ranged from "What kind of band is this?" to "I like them, but they sing most random songs."

Mission accomplished 😎

Took my 10 year old to the mall yesterday. Apparently, this was the first time she's ever been in a good mall (our local mall is perpetually dying).

She walked around wide-eyed and talked about how amazing it was there.

I fear the local mall is no longer enough 😵‍💫

Managed to sit down and write one final blog post this year.

Even with the last year being... not great, there was still some great things that happened.

The best part about having kids is that sometimes you get an in-depth lecture about something like, say, Vermeer before you've even finished your first pot of coffee 😵‍💫

Even if no one ever reads your stuff, if you write, you're a writer.
There is no such thing as an "aspiring" writer. You're just a writer. You are creating. Own it.

Every year my wife and I swear we're going to remember our anniversary and do something for it. Every year we both forget until one of us doesn't.

It was my turn to remember this year.

We've been doing this for 19 years now 😂

I'm feeling more excited about 2025 than I expected to be.

The last couple of years have been challenging, but I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Speaking at outdoor media summit really helped bring things into focus this year.

One of my favourite traditions as a parent is making something like pizza and watching Miyazaki movies with my daughter. Tonight it's pizza and Spirited Away.

Gave a talk at my local fly fishing club about small creek fishing last night.

I'm discovering a love of giving talks. I could talk about how awesome small creeks are for days without stopping, I'm sure.

My library has what is essentially an order tracker for interlibrary loans.

I love watching my books get closer, but it's killing my productivity 😂

I love hitting that stage where rejections are personalized, instead of obvious boilerplate replies.

It's probably the best metric of improvement I can of think of (beyond getting a lot of yesses).

Sometimes I'll throw on an episode of something I've already seem before to fill a gap between shows. Sometimes, I get hooked again without even meaning to because the show is just that good.

Anyhoo, I guess I'm watching The Good Place again for the second time in six months 😂
