Quite pleased to hear of a new Stargate show. It has been awhile but have plenty of happy memories of the shows, so fingers crossed this works out.

If looking for why Liu Bei was seen in a positive light and for some of his ability, his flight across Jing works well. The way Liu Bei cultivated his image via his decisions (and his claimed motives behind them) show his long term reputational thinking. There are three examples in a short time span

Thinking of, when speaking of Romance of the three kingdoms and other three kingdoms based literature, of switching from saying fiction to romantic tradition. Think people would get the fiction part for that while placing the Romance within a long history of storytelling about the era

Dynasty Warriors Orgins getting a DLC. What I expected if they were going to do one (letting you play under the “other lords” aka Turbans, Dong Zhuo, Lu Bu and Yuan Shao) but seems like a good sign for the future of the franchise.

I like their revamped Zhang Jiao and Yuan Shao so should be fun.

This remains, to this day, one of my favorite stories from ancient Egyptian history: the time when the pharaoh's tomb workers went on strike.
November 14, 1152 BCE: the first recorded workers' strike occurred in ancient Egypt under Pharaoh Ramses III. Artisans and laborers working on the royal tombs at Deir el-Medina stopped working in protest of delayed and insufficient rations, a form of wages. collezioni.museoegizio.it/en-GB/materi...

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the planned income tax rise, I think this U-turn will be one the government will pay for. It was key for Reeves and Starmer markets backed Reeves as they felt she would do the tough things. They won't believe that again, so won't shore up her position any more.

On the topic of horrors (that aren't the British fever dream known as Mr Blobby), Happy Halloween!

Medieval Halloween was a bit different, being a three day festival held from 31 October - 2 November, encompassing All Saints' Eve (Halloween), All Saints' Day (All Hallows') and All Souls' Day (1)

Weather held up here, got plenty of trick and treaters who seemed to be having a good time. Alas, got one costume wrong! It is good, in such times, to see people having joy.

Have a fun Halloween, hope the weather is good tonight wherever you are and be safe

A few thoughts on the Halloween spending. 1) Like the farmer, Halloween wasn't a thing where I lived when I was young. While it is now taken off and quite fast, though I doubt it will ever get to US levels, there is still room for it to grow as a holiday here.

“I don't know much about the three kingdoms so here is a question about it...”

My problem is I tend to go too long with an intro to set up the setting for the person. So working on whittling one such intro down before exploring the meat of the question.

Got my flu jab today. Helps prevent me from getting something serious, makes the winter months a lot more pleasant than they used to be, and helps others not get sick.

Vaccinations are quite the win for humanity.

Been a few questions in last week on @askhistorians.bsky.social about magic. I suspect Halloween has brought that about, and it is fun seeing people wanting to understand the parts of the past that can seem strange to many in the modern day. So thank you to the spooky holidays for that.

Watched the horror film Orphan yesterday. Enjoyed what they did with the title sequence (and that it wasn't a random “this is different”). Was good at fake outs but overdid them by the time of the finale, some scenes had a very good atmosphere and the story went along nicely. Had a fun time.

Two priestesses begin a ritual to bless a sea voyage that will bring people from their community in the Philippines to China for trade. Baylans were spiritual leaders who also served as doctors & political advisors. And some were trans!
