Most people are not political scientists using formal definitions. So I am curious when is the moment that people tell themselves "oh, I live under an authoritarian government now." Because what else is this?

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

In grad school I got into an argument with a professor about "everyday Germans" during the 3rd reich. He argued that they are not to blame/responsible for the Holocaust. I vehemently disagreed. Seeing Americans complying in advance or w/ no resistance, I wonder if he's still clueless.

Current reading.

The book is divided into sections on the mythic past, propaganda, anti-intellectualism, unreality, hierarchy, victimhood, law and order, and sexual anxiety. Stanley provides examples of fascist rhetoric and policies in the contemporary US, India, Poland, France, Myanmar, etc.

In recent decades everyone has been real proud of how we’ve been able to lower disaster death tolls.

At this rate, those days are over.
The U.S. has two tsunami warning centers, both operated by NOAA. Employees were terminated from these centers today. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center covers Hawaiʻi, and now it is less safe to be near the beach.

NOAA is an absolute mess, and it’ll be worse tomorrow. Please help us. There have already been over 1,000 terminations. It’s not just layoffs—Elon Musk and his staffers are trying to completely dismantle us. Today, there were tons of firings, and more are coming tomorrow.

Since we started the Elon Musk boycott, Tesla shares have dropped nearly 26% in the last month. Remember, don’t buy anything Elon.
