Shortly after the NHS was created in 1948, it led to a recruitment campaign to attract Irish students to train and work as nurses. By 1971, they made up around 12% of all nursing staff in the NHS.

In 2024, workers at five of the UK's largest supermarkets, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and the Co-op, were pursuing equal pay cases.

In 2025, around £1 billion was awarded to women taking equal pay claims through the GMB union alone.

#OnThisDay, 29 Dec 1975, the Sex Discrimination and Equal Pay Acts came into effect in the UK. These made it unlawful to discriminate based on sex or marital status, and made it a requirement to pay men and women equally for equal work.

Dame Louisa Aldrich-Blake died in London 100 years ago #OTD 28 Dec 1925. Born at Chingford Rectory in 1865, she was the first British woman to qualify as Master of Surgery. She was lead surgeon at Royal Free Hospital & a pioneer of surgery for cervical cancer. Her statue is in Tavistock Square WC1.

On this day in 1919, the Nurses Registration Act(s) became law, forming three General Nursing Councils in the UK, whose role was to maintain a register of nurses.

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
