Shortly after the NHS was created in 1948, it led to a recruitment campaign to attract Irish students to train and work as nurses. By 1971, they made up around 12% of all nursing staff in the NHS.

In 2024, workers at five of the UK's largest supermarkets, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and the Co-op, were pursuing equal pay cases.

In 2025, around £1 billion was awarded to women taking equal pay claims through the GMB union alone.

#OnThisDay, 29 Dec 1975, the Sex Discrimination and Equal Pay Acts came into effect in the UK. These made it unlawful to discriminate based on sex or marital status, and made it a requirement to pay men and women equally for equal work.

Dame Louisa Aldrich-Blake died in London 100 years ago #OTD 28 Dec 1925. Born at Chingford Rectory in 1865, she was the first British woman to qualify as Master of Surgery. She was lead surgeon at Royal Free Hospital & a pioneer of surgery for cervical cancer. Her statue is in Tavistock Square WC1.

On this day in 1919, the Nurses Registration Act(s) became law, forming three General Nursing Councils in the UK, whose role was to maintain a register of nurses.

Two paper copies of the 1919 Nurses Registration Act, showing the title page and a list of the contents titled 'Arrangement of Sections'. These include: 1. Establishment and constitution of General Nursing Council 2. Register of Nurses 3. Rules 4. Staff and expenses 5. Fees 6. Admission to register of persons trained outside United Kingdom 7. Appeal against removal from register, and against refusal to approve institution 8. Penalties for unlawful assumption of title of nurse and for falsification of register 9. Extent and short title A poem written by Nurse, Violetta Thurstan titled 'A B C of State Registration. Two old, paper documents relating to Nursing Registration. The first document, issued by the College of Nursing Ltd, calls nurses to attend a meeting on 23rd January 1919 at the Royal Society of Medicine, where speakers will explain the Nurses Registration Bill. The second document discusses the 'Economic Conditions in the Nursing Profession', advocating for state registration and to improve public safety and economic independence for nurses.

Front cover of Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 tied with offical red tape. (Governmental practice is the source of the phrase "tied up in red tape"). The basic purpose of the act was, as stated in its long title, "to amend the Law with respect to disqualification on account of sex", which it achieved in four short sections and one schedule. Its broad aim was achieved by section 1, which stated that: A person shall not be disqualified by sex or marriage from the exercise of any public function, or from being appointed to or holding any civil or judicial office or post, or from entering or assuming or carrying on any civil profession or vocation, or for admission to any incorporated society (whether incorporated by Royal Charter or otherwise), [and a person shall not be exempted by sex or marriage from the liability to serve as a juror] ...[3]. It is the reason many of the women i post about had their careers but was weakened by act passed in August the same yeat The Restoration of Pre-War Practices Act 1919 which saw 25% of working women legally pushed out of their jobs

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
