This is absurd.

The red supergiant Betelgeuse is the bright feature in this image.

But that darker blue splotch is a *companion star* that's just been discovered—and it orbits so close to Betelgeuse that it's inside the larger star's outer atmosphere.

To my Systems Thinking people: Have you ever come across the book, "Systemantics: How Systems Work and Especially How They Fail"? Is it worth reading? Has it ever been in reprint since 1977?

New paper: "Large Language Models and Emergence: A Complex Systems Perspective" (D. Krakauer, J. Krakauer, M. Mitchell).

We look at claims of "emergent capabilities" & "emergent intelligence" in LLMs from the perspective of what emergence means in complexity science.

It’s a shame—truly, it is—that so many never learned the elegance of the em dash.

#nytxw You don’t see a particular high-IQ society in the puzzle for years and then suddenly it’s there two days in a row. How does that happen?! The funny side of probability and statistics.

In what ways have you seen people who extensively use LLMs change their interactions with others in online and IRL situations? Better concepts? Easier ability to express ideas? Updated ways of speaking? Or, no noticeable effects at all?

Let’s say there’s a US company that sells subscriptions to access their software or media, and people in other countries are buying it. Are those sales included in determining trade deficits? Would they be subjected to tariffs? Or are tariffs exclusively on physical products that are shipped?

Twice today I got 2FA codes with 8 digits instead of the 6 digit codes that I've usually seen. Starting to max out human short-term memory for digits! (7 ± 2 items (5-9 digits) for about 15-30 seconds)

I've been using LLMs to think through a lot of personal projects. I would definitely open up to LLMs more if I knew that my personal data was protected. One of the nice things about talking to a friend is that they don't upload your conversation to the cloud. LLMs should have an edge-only option.
