When running, every step creates a 'shockwave' that travels up our body. Researchers have hypothesized that these 'shocks,' and how our body deals with them, may cause injury. We show that injured runners deal with these 'shocks' differently than uninjured runners, particularly as they get tired.

Please repost! We have a second biomechanics faculty position!

This is an open rank clinical-track position in sports biomechanics at the University of Michigan. This is a largely teaching-focused position and we have outstanding resources to support teaching and student learning. #BiomechSky

I would rather listen to something too loud or too quiet than listen on a volume setting that isn't a multiple of 5.

12 is also acceptable.

Since RFK Jr is taking over the NIH, I've decided to pivot my grant direction. It will now be about the biomechanics of bear wrestling as a form of subsistence farming. Interested collaborators and participants HMU.

Best listening while you write or code?

For me, it's Forest Swords,

or this one very specific white noise (I've tried a bunch and this is the only one that doesn't distract me).

I thought my "procrastinate to the last second before finishing dissertation" plan was foolproof but now that my kids have school holidays, and I'm sick, and they're sick I'm starting to reconsider. O well, now I know for the next one.

IMUs allow running biomechanics to be studied in the "real world." In real world scenarios, however, an IMU may be misplaced or may move across a data collection. We quantified how a small difference in IMU placement can affect accelerations and angular velocities.

Option A: Spend 2 minutes cleaning up my 3 year old's mess.

Option B: Spend 1 hour of full-blown, all-out tantrum getting the 3 year old to clean up their own mess.

I'm a good decision maker... 😵‍💫☠️

Runner's ground reaction forces are used to assess performance and injury risk but are hard to measure outside labs. We compared 27 potential methods to estimate real-world forces and found that measured accelerations accurately estimate ground reaction forces!
