Afraid I laughed just now when I read that all the novels on the Booker list are ‘brilliantly human.’
September 23, 2025 at 7:54 PM
Deeply alarmed to see the world’s leading demagogue on the news just now wearing a ‘What would Orwell think!’ T shirt.

Great to hear the wonderful @coryhanson.bsky.social is playing the Moth Club Hackney in February!

Always a reliable critic..,
Finished reading Poppyland by @djtaylorwriter.bsky.social last night.

Like Stewkey Blues, this is a great collection of short stories though this time mainly set in and around Norwich rather than Norfolk as a whole.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Apropos of this, very sorry to hear just now of death of Byron Rogers, Carr’s biographer.

Enjoyed doing this. And he turned out to be a fan of Rock and Roll is Life, which is always a good start.

Terrific stuff! This is the view of Norwich market from Caffè Nero, where much of Poppyland @saltpublishing.com was written. Greatly obliged to @jonathancoe.bsky.social
Location footage fans! Last night Together TV, which screens some incredible 1970s curios at the weekends, unearthed a film from 1974 called Got It Made, described by its sole IMDb reviewer as ‘the most Norwich-centric film ever made’. I wonder if @djtaylorwriter.bsky.social knows about it?

Delighted to report that @coryhanson.bsky.social ‘I Love People’ is the business and joins @stereolabgroop.bsky.social album as best thing I’ve heard this year.

Superb design job by @yalebooks.bsky.social for pb of Who is Big Brother? Out next month @orwellprize.bsky.social

Great to see three generations of the family getting a mention!

Very depressed to learn that @thetls.bsky.social is going fortnightly as of 6 September. Little enough space for serious book reviewing as it is.

Love this illustration to Critic piece in support of my new short story collection Poppyland @saltpublishing.com This is ‘The Frogman’, who prowled the streets of south-west Norwich in my childhood.

Andrew O’Hagan terrific on Joan Didion in new @lrb.co.uk

Glad to have hit the spot!
Great collection of (13) short stories by @djtaylorwriter.bsky.social - mostly set in Norfolk. My fav is 'Yare Valley Mud' about the sex lives of 2 Norwich-based taxi cab controllers which is full of humour. DJT is adept at portraying different English social classes. Published: @saltpublishing.com

Very much obliged to Mr Cochrane here.
An ill wind: Poppyland, by @djtaylorwriter.bsky.social , reviewed in The Spectator by George Cochrane

‘Norfolk life looks quietly bleak in these carefully worked short stories of broken homes, precarious employment, dwindling expectations and torpor’
An ill wind: Poppyland, by D.J. Taylor, reviewed
As the term refers to the stretch of the north Norfolk coastline between Sheringham and Mundesley, only one of the stories in D.J. Taylor’s engrossing new collection strictly takes place in ‘Poppyland...

Obliged to Mr Akram here. Gather he’s never been to Norfolk. Ought to visit!
Terrific review by Hassan Akram of
@djtaylorwriter.bsky.social’s new short stories, Poppyland, in the Literary Review:

‘Smells of oil, burnt sugar and kebabs linger long after the plots have faded.’

With two top lads just before Iggy Pop’s arrival on stage at the Alexandra Palace last night. He was terrific. Adroitly managed exit in a coffin.
