Many people on socmed responding to the Farage racism story with ‘We all said things like that in the 70s’. If you did, you’re one of those who made my childhood miserable much of the time. And if you have no remorse, face facts: you’re (still) a racist.

Shameful. This is the result of appeasing bullies.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

I think this is one of Bowie’s best songs. He was about 23-24 when he wrote it, and it’s just … lovely. If you don’t know it, listen to the lyrics. Very touching.

This is at the heart of so much that’s wrong in UK. Johnson, Mogg, so many others - they would be dismissed out of hand if there wasn’t this ridiculous deference to people with posh accents.
Truth is, the man is as thick as a submarine door. Picture literally any job EXCEPT Daily Mail columnist, and try to imagine him nailing it.

You can't, can you?

If he said any of his bullshit in a thick Mancunian accent, you'd write him off in 2 seconds. But say it posh — gets away with murder.

A timely quote from Réné Rémond, writing about France in the 1930s:

‘It is the press of the right that formed public opinion … the Frenchman, even if he voted on the left, most often read a newspaper of the right, whose inclination was more and more towards Fascism.’

Lovely morning - no rain, no wind. Just my pleasant neighbours to greet my pups and me on our morning walk.

Thank you, Judge Schwager. But it shouldn’t require a judge to say something that is so hugely obvious.

To turn this argument on its head: if OpenAI had won, presumably it would be fine for me to go into their HQ and help myself to whatever I want.

Watching TOTP on BBC4 and this came up. I remember lying in bed as a child with measles listening to it on the radio … 60 years ago. Still word perfect, still makes me misty eyed.

Rachel Reeves: if you’re serious about growth, rejoining the SM/CU is the only effective option.

It’s naked theft of intellectual property. To describe it as ‘controversial’ is absurd.

If I were to enter the offices of @economist.com and steal items, would they accept me describing my actions as merely ‘controversial’?
Britain enjoys a global reputation for its creative sector. Artists boost the economy and, in a hard-to-measure way, national pride. The prospect of AI ingesting their work is controversial

I grew up in the 60s and 70s when comments like these were common. Who would have thought that half a century later, a politician could say this without being universally condemned?

This - for someone like me who knows very little about economics - is a fascinating read. The obsession with state deficits may be entirely wrong.

I wish I knew enough to know if this analysis is correct. It is certainly well argued.
