I started going to Worldcons for the Business Meeting
"We will cure cancer in 100 days" would also be pretty popular if people thought you could do it. But unless you have a plan for how Dems can sweep 21 of the 22 GOP Senate seats up for election in mostly deep red states, or get a bunch of GOP Senators to go along, it isn't any more realistic.

I'm at the 62nd Design Automation Conference today in San Francisco. This is one of the premier conferences for software that helps chip designers design better chips. I noticed something about the authors of the 32 technical papers I picked to read. 1/n

Heh. @bretdevereaux.bsky.social just finished a series on the stuff that's wrong with the portrayal of the opening battle of Gladiator, including Maximus's name (like the battle, it looks superficially authentic, but doesn't fit the way the Romans actually did stuff). acoup.blog/2025/06/20/c...

just saying: it's possible that "I'm gonna dramatically constrict my state capacity while plotting dramatic imperial expansion, and expanding my set of internal enemies while alienating most of my foreign allies" is the beginning of a world-historical masterstroke. but also possible that it isn't

Trans rights are human rights, even if the current Supreme Court doesn't recognize that. I'll be checking with a trans pastor I know to see what trans-positive charities she can recommend to add to our giving list over the next few years.
My guess is that a lot of trans people will be feeling a ton of stress and worry over SCOTUS today.

If you are a cis person, quote this and say why you support trans people and what you are willing to do to support us if the government comes for us.

How can I check if a number is divisible by 7 when the number has 1,000 or more digits?
David Wallace's answer: I came up with a method I call the “231 method,” which I’m sure others must have come up with previously. It’s based on the fact that 1000=-1, 100=2, 10=3, and 1=1 (mod 7). Thi...

I've never kept a diary. But I've just prepped a bunch of financial records from the 80s and 90s for shredding, and I see fragments of my life in the check records. My rent on my 1st grad school room ($133/month). The camera I bought to document my move to Berkeley. 1/n

This would be a DM to @smarier.bsky.social if Bluesky had DMs. I've got a friend who would like to host a SFF film festival some day. Don't know how much he knows the nuts and bolts. I've pointed him to Worldcon as an example. Can you say anything about what Seattle (or Glasgow) is doing for film?
