Exe estuary (Powderham-Turf) this lunchtime. Very quiet, but included Stonechat (m), Meadow Pipit (c.5), Black-tailed Godwit, juvenile Wheatear, 4 Black Swans and a count of 43 Mute Swans.

Sparrowhawk just swooped into the garden and caught a House Sparrow. It would have eaten it there and then save for an inquisitive Herring Gull scaring it off clutching the sparrow.

Aylesbere this am. Looking at a beautiful male Yellowhammer when two Dartford Warblers turned up close by, in the same bush. A Willow Warbler and male Stonechat calling nearby. Plenty of Linnets there too.

🚨 BREAKING: Turtle-dove hunting season reopens!

The EU Commission just gave the green light for EU countries to resume the hunt for European Turtle-doves, ending a 3-year pause.

This is reckless, short-sighted and will take this bird back to the brink.
