Reading the Capitol Weekly story on gender parity in the #CALeg, we've been tracking demographics in the leg at CRB for a while, we've already twice seen this trend, a spike in female legislators is followed by a drop, while long term trend stays toward parity.

The @uclaanderson forecast director @jnickelsburg just announced his retirement! He's been quite the legend in California economics. 👏(Don't worry, like any good academic, will only be semi-retired)

Very informative data on what people know/care about.
The top-left (don't know/do care) is full of economic good news and environmental bad news ... if only people knew a little more about that.
Lots of political horse race and drama in the don't care sections.

California is doing ... better than average!
Room for improvement, but not doom and gloom.
Every state except one (North Dakota) has now seen their GDP recover or exceed pre-COVID levels!

Fastest: Florida (23.5%), Idaho (23%), Utah (21.8%), Arizona (19.9%), Texas (19.5%)

Slowest: North Dakota (-0.2%), Hawaii (1.7%), Alaska (3.5%), Louisiana (3.8%), Illinois (3.9%)

"Data produced by the CA Research Bureau, a state government research institute, shows that CA issued permits for less than half the amount of homes per month in 2023 than it did in the 80s, approx 1/2 as much housing as TX and 2/3 as many as FL"

There’s no protecting California values without building more housing
California’s slow housing production is a direct threat to the future of our state’s political values and power in the aftermath of the presidential election.

However, despite increased focus on industrial policy, manufacturing productivity remains stagnant. Recent US productivity gains are instead concentrated in the service sector—which is bad for onshoring ambitions but good for the welfare of US citizens who mostly consume & produce services.
