A section of petrified wood from the late Triassic, about 225 million years ago. This fallen tree was buried in wet mud and volcanic ash. Silica minerals like clear quartz, purple amethyst, and yellow citrine gradually replaced the organic parts. Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, 06 Mar 2010.

From New York, Groll studied art in Europe before returning home in 1895. Initially a figure painter, he turned to landscapes and traveled west with ethnologist Stuart Culin in 1904. Groll returned often to the Southwest, finding success with his landscapes featuring low horizons and sweeping skies.
