For accessibility, should a button respond to Enter, Space, or both? axe Assistant’s Answer Best practice: Both keys should activate a button. WCAG only requires that buttons be operable by keyboard, but consistency matters for usability. Enter/Return: Activates buttons and links. Space: Activates buttons only. Browsers handle this automatically for native <button> elements. (WCAG 2.1.1 – Keyboard) Code Example (Good vs. Bad) ❌ Bad (keyboard trap): <div onClick="submitForm()">Submit</div> ✅ Good (keyboard accessible): <button type="submit">Submit</button> ✅ If custom element: myEl.addEventListener('keydown', (e) => { if (e.key === 'Enter' || e.key === ' ') { // trigger action e.preventDefault(); } }); What to watch out for Pitfalls & best practices: Don’t replace real buttons with <div> + click or you’ll lose expected keyboard behavior. Remember: Space uses keydown (not keyup). Always prevent default when handling Space, or the page may scroll. Test with both keys to confirm accessibility.

Why it matters: Screen readers rely on alternative text to describe non-text content. Without it, people who are blind/low vision miss critical info. Alt done right = more inclusive experiences. axe Assistant’s Answer: All informative images need alt text. That includes: Product photos. Logos that convey brand identity. Diagrams & charts (with summarized descriptions). Decorative images can use: <img src="pattern.png" alt="" /> Code Example (Good vs. Bad): ❌ Bad: <img src="soccer-team.jpg"> ✅ Good: <img src="team.jpg" alt="Soccer team members standing together smiling with a trophy in hand"> What to watch out for: ⚠️ Pitfalls & best practices: Don’t use the filename as the alt text. Logos need meaningful text (e.g., “Deque logo”). Decorative? Use alt="", not “decorative image.” Complex charts? Provide a short summary in the alt text + long description elsewhere.
