Saturday Night at the Movies: That's the way it...was? I share a few thoughts about the demise of CBS News, and recommend some timely documentaries about press freedom-up now at Digby's Hullabaloo. digbysblog.net/2026/01/03/b...
Yeah. She was Ulrike Meinhof, armed with stuffed animals. Got it.
Vance on the late Renee Good: "That woman was there to interfere with a legitimate law enforcement operation in the USA…That woman is part of a broader left-wing network to attack, to dox, to assault, and to make it impossible for our ICE officers to do their job."

Shorter JD Vance: "The thing about yesterday's shooting is the fraud in Minnesota." 🙄

JD Vance thinks that screeching "SHE TRIED TO RUN HIM OVER!" on a continuous loop will make it true. Bless his heart.

Dear Press: The victim in the Minneapolis incident has been named. Now name her murderer. Do a little probing.

Well, shit. I missed the news (that apparently broke Monday) about the Corporation for Public Broadcasting shutdown-precipitated by Trump's funding freeze. Guess I was distracted by the Venezuelan escapade, which I'm sure will ultimately cost taxpayers hella more than the "wasteful" CPB allotment. 🙄

"U.S. Border Patrol commander-at-large Gregory Bovino, who has led other enforcement actions in Chicago, Charlotte and New Orleans, was also on site."

Of course he was.

Generally, I adhere to "separating the art from the artist", but as a long-time fan I have to admit I was a bit disappointed to see Kurt Russell's participation in the recent Kennedy Center ceremony. #TCMParty

Seeing some interesting parallels between the slide show scenes in SILKWOOD and in CARNAL KNOWLEGE (emotional undercurrents; sexual jealousy) Never picked up on that before. #TCMParty

#TCMParty DVR Alert: Up the Workers! A triple-bill of outstanding labor dramas kicks off at 5pm on TCM with NORMA RAE, followed by SILKWOOD and MATEWAN. I wrote about all three films here: denofcinema.com/lord-i-am-so...

Good time to rewatch THE DEATH OF STALIN.
You hate to let Trump off the hook, but the speculation about his health obviously gets to him and he's feeling paranoid. He probably already suspects that some of his people are stabbing him in the back and they're all starting to position themselves. Stir the shit.

I totally get it.

The media has been woefully incurious about the "80 Venezuelans killed" and the Trump administration has certainly gone out of their way to downplay it. All I've seen is the same 15 second clip of someone who looks like a civilian assessing the rubble of what looks to be a residential area. Whatevs!

Whatever one thinks of the attack on Venezuela, you have to admire the skill and strategic precision of the military forces that stormed Madura's fortress and so effectively removed the Epstein Files from the headlines.

I'd like to hear less superlatives like "stunning" and "remarkable" from the media when describing Trump's Venezuela escapade and more accurate descriptives like "illegal" and "insane".

I can attest EARTH vs. THE FLYING SAUCERS is an ancient film because it was released the year I was born. 😬 #TCMParty

Mission accomplished!
It’s hard to believe a president would time an illegal military attack to distract the public’s attention, but today is the statutory deadline for DOJ to release its report on the Epstein file production. Maybe it is just a coincidence.

If Trump learned anything from his clowning gig with the WWE, it's that you always need to set up a "villain". And once you "conquer" your foe, make a big show of chest-pounding & strutting around the ring doing a victory lap (this morning's press conference). Absolutely goddam right this is staged.
The cynics think today's attack on Venezuela is staged and transactional. Maduro is allied with Putin, but in 2019 Putin offered Trump a swap: Russia cedes Venezuela and gets Ukraine. (See Fiona Hill's testimony in Trump's first impeachment trial, h/t @davetroy.com). Even Maduro may be in on it. 2/

Trump: "We're going to run Venezuela." I learned lots of fun facts from watching I, CLAUDIUS back in the day...for example, the Roman emperors would appoint Roman governors in every province in their empire to oversee the administration and the social law and order. 🤔 denofcinema.com/dvd-reissue-...

World War 1 began with the assassination of a relatively obscure archduke.
