The deaths of 350+ elephants in Botswana in 2020 were probably due to toxic algae in the water they drank. Mass-mortality events are becoming more common as the world heats up, and can push species toward extinction.

Zoos often face a 'surplus of animals', leading to 3,000-5,000 animals being killed annually in Europe. In 2014, Copenhagen Zoo killed four lions to make way for a new male, and a giraffe who could no longer reproduce.

Scientists call for 'longevity conservation'. Humans are killing off the old & wise animals that hold nature together. Older animals perform vital roles in populations and ecosystems but can suffer the most from human activity like #overfishing & #trophyhunting.

Humans are killing off the old and wise animals that hold nature together. Here’s what must change
Like big, tall trees in old-growth forests, older animals are irreplaceable. Pulling them out leaves the ecosystem less resilient to future shocks. It’s time for ‘longevity conservation’ measures.
