Feel free to add your own ideas for reforming Congress!

1. We should pay Congress critters based on the median income in their states. When they make crap money, they might actually work for real job growth, real income growth so that their salary increases, too. #ReformCongress

For today's @notesfromtheworld.bsky.social, I spoke with Venezuelan anthropologist @jlrodriguez10.bsky.social & Venezuelan-American journalist Germania Rodriguez Poleo about the situation following the seizure of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces last weekend. michaeldeibert.substack.com/p/venezuela-...
“Venezuela is a country that everybody wants to use as a rhetorical tool in the United States but not a country that a lot of people are interested in actually knowing.”

Nothing to see here. Just Trump's goons trying to make him even more like Maduro and other dictators by racking up the citizen kill count.

I watched an interview with Venezuelan leader Maria Corina Machado by CBS's Tony Dokoupil. Tony spent most of the interview recounting what Machado just said, "So I'm hearing you say...," and completely fabricating or turning around every word. Fuck the new CBS News and fuck Bari Weiss.

Everybody should step back, read this, and think very hard about what they push in their next social media post about Venezuela. Or don't even post. You're all making my wife angry, and I don't need an angry Venezuelan wife next to me. :D

If I was Denmark/Greenland, I'd kick the US out of Pituffik Space Base and tell them the can come back when they grow the hell up.
This is where we are. Read this joint statement by France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Kingdom of Denmark on Greenland:

"Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland."

One of my friends from Venezuela writes about the pain and anger they are feeling at people debating if they have a right to be happy Maduro is gone, and even want him sent back as Venezuelans try to figure out how to be rid of the rest of the regime.

Dear Netflix,

Can I get a partial refund for all the space taken up in your app by suggestions I watch RAW wrestling b.s.? Alternatively, you could give us a checkbox to block categories, like wrestling b.s.

Sincerely,

Sentinal Energy’s VP and principal partner, Mr. Global, explains why Trump’s idea that oil companies will flock to Venezuela to rebuild the petroleum infrastructure there is ludicrous and ponders OPEC’s possible responses.

Both can be true.

Exactly this. In all the hand wringing about Trump and oil and regime change, do not belittle or denigrate Venezuelans for happiness and hope at a chance finally out of a decades long Chavist nightmare.

Translation in following comments.
I thought this was super poignant to all the people so quick to take the high ground and doesn't seem to understand there are people hurting there in the country too, who matter just as much, as all the other stuff.

Remember: As the news comes from Venezuela that we really can’t trust anything from anyone. Trump and his sycophants will strut and preen and grandstand. The regime and opposition in Venezuela will report truth or not — it’s chaotic right now.

My hope is with the Venezuelan people.

I am married to a Venezuelan and have many family and friends there. What @hollum-dusk.bsky.social says here is exactly right. Trump is all about his own image and I fear he and his admin haven’t planned for after. There are colectivos to handle. Did they coordinate with opposition? Trump is chaos.
Just want everyone to understand something: Trump is a corrupt, senile pedophile working only out of self-interest and possible dementia. Maduro is a Dictator and criminal who has perpetuated a murderous regime to enrich himself and his lackeys, keeping us in misery. Both this statements can be true

Another year has gone by in Baltimore that sees a massive drop in crimes, even carjacking which news reports and city haters tried to say were increasing. Let’s keep up the work and get numbers even better, B’more!

Happy New Year to everyone, in spite of things that've happened.

I really don't like Auld Lang Syne. So, for years, I've picked a song from my favorite artists to play at midnight that will inspire me throughout the year. I haven't thought on it much yet. It'll likely be Marillion.

I think this is a perfect metaphor for where tech is going these days considering they are simply advancing without taking into account the ramifications and adjusting for that beforehand.

What if I’m a U.S. citizen but want to make another country my home? Can I get subsidized to emigrate?
Kristi Noem makes an announcement on Fox & Friends: "We are saying that if you voluntarily want to go home now to your country, if you're in the US illegally, we'll give you $3,000 through the holidays to send you home. We'll buy you a ticket, give you $3,000 to go home."
