The Anxiety Of Influence literary theory is as accurate as auteur theory is for film

BULWORTH. Masterpiece. Don’t think there’s any greater dissonance in music than Warren Beatty’s rhyming, which while I find funny barely qualifies as music in categorization, and Ennio Morricone’s score which is spiritually ravishing

it's also very goofy that people can comprehend the time/impact at the club meme or the dead character haunting the movie trope but not part of the underlying logic

Directors I read about on letterboxd then feel bad because I don't watch their movies or read anyone else watch their movies

Mika Kaurismaki
Lodge Kerrigan
Šarūnas Bartas
Milcho Manchevski

If I was a director, I would like to be this kind of director

A problem with a lot of film discussion on here is the "they only had 5 minutes of screentime. They were barely in the movie." 5 minutes is an exceptional amount of time, people regularly don't really know how long a minute is

There's a shot that abstract represents a workplace injury that is so beautiful and poetic, it makes you treat so much other kitchen-sink British cinema like shit in comparison

in all fairness, is there a human alive that is as lucky as trump? the guy has some dark gods on his side
people are spinning out scenarios that they can imagine seeng in movies and then asserting that trump will absolutely accomplish this because, as you know, he holds the infinity stones

Love this part of the Mad Men season 3 finale where Don gets really Eminem with it

Hannah Einbinder has hot girl nepotism (her mother was the hottest woman to ever be on Saturday Night Live).

Also her name sounds like a secondary Fassbinder character actress which only adds to the appeal

Cinephile on twitter: Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite director of the 1950s, I'm such an infidel

DON'T LOOK NOW has an insanely hard Italian title.

Translates to: In Venice... a shocking red December

Newsom is truly the worst of all worlds, a California liberal that sucks at governing and also moderates in the most evil ways possible. American Starmer

People will say ABBA songs make no sense in English translation, then cry-twerk to a native English pop song with as bad grammar and worse melodic joy

If I could curate a Criterion release, I'd do one for commercials and ads by either big directors, or just ones that are cool or feature a really hot person

What’s a normie movie that has a scene you could put in a Lars Von Trier movie? I’m obsessed with how About My Father has a scene where Robert De Niro butchers the family’s beloved pet peacock, cooks it, and they unknowingly gorge upon it

Roger Ebert said this in 1988. LOOK OUT ROG. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW BAD IT'S GONNA GET

Hate to say it considering nuclear weapons are the great evil of humanity but: Iran needs a nuke.

Brazil needs a nuke.

Egypt needs a nuke

Not that this shit matters compared to genocide or war, but what if she gives it to Trump anyway. What are they going to do about it, force him to give it back, he kidnapped the president of Venezuela
The Norwegian Nobel Prize committee has been forced to make a statement, declaring that the prize cannot be transferred.
It's hard even to comprehend how stupid this has become

Crazy that the Cheerleader Effect doesn't apply to men because French movies will have the most beautiful women in the world and yet everyone tweets about how all the men look like a slime vomited them out

talk about failing the bechdel test
I read an interview today where Alison Bechdel talked about using chatGPT for a panel of her recent comic -- she prompted it and copied the results -- and I still don't know what to do with that. It genuinely feels in moments like this like so many of our art elders are failing us.
Catching up with what James Gurney, the Dinotopia artist, is up to these days. Pathetic.
