pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

The designer of the new Grand Ballroom at the White House is a young architect named Howard Roark.

I'm secretly hoping the general contractor decides to alter the design in some small, petty way.

The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

I’m not blogging at all this month (revising the book manuscript), but if I wasn’t on blogging-hiatus, here’s what I’d be writing:

(1) An awful lot of centrist pundit-types built their careers in the ‘10s around writing takes that perform well on algorithmic media.
Shorter Josh Barro: “and another thing: I’m not mad. Please don’t put in the newspaper that I got mad.”
Yeah, as someone who's watching both sites, Barro is vastly overstating his point, and the more evident outcome has been center-left "intellectuals" palling around with Richard Hanania

I ran an experiment, simultaneously posting articles on Bluesky and X, and then testing to see how many people actually clicked and read them. The numbers on Bluesky are higher, both because the X algorithm downranks journalism, and because Bluesky attracts readers, not just shitposters.
