We had a lot of #mathisfun in our 1st-3rd grade #mathCircle looking at angles & seeing angles of a triangle add to 180deg. We discussed why we use 360 instead of a power of 10 to measure angles and talked a bit about #historyOfMath and zero. One student made their own protractor! #mtbos #iteachmath

We had a lot of #mathisfun in our 1st-3rd grade #mathCircle looking at angles & seeing angles of a triangle add to 180deg. We discussed why we use 360 instead of a power of 10 to measure angles and talked a bit about #historyOfMath and zero. One student made their own protractor! #mtbos #iteachmath
I'm looking forward to today's #mathCircle at UNC (ironically later is a football game UNC vs Stanford and I teach for both math circles!) where 1st-3rd graders will explore angles and using a protractor - we'll have an angle lesson for Stanford classes this week too. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I'm looking forward to today's #mathCircle at UNC (ironically later is a football game UNC vs Stanford and I teach for both math circles!) where 1st-3rd graders will explore angles and using a protractor - we'll have an angle lesson for Stanford classes this week too. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

In level 4 we started w/a #mathisfun challenge question re: finding when pg 100 is read if i pgs are read on day i inspired by an article in #NCTM's Oct2024 Mathematics Teacher; in prealg we tried #mathKangaroo problem re: finding next number w/symbols. Students solved them both! #mtbos #iteachmath

Sometimes when we wait till high school/college/later to learn a math concept, it seems needlessly complex. I love how this 1st grader nicely showed why nCk = nC(n-k) -- e.g., 5 choose 3 = 5 choose 2, via mirror. And she made an artful #pascalsTriangle for #halloween! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

It’s often easier, faster, and less error-prone to do #mathisfun mental math especially with interesting models than to use some ‘standard algorithms’. At the very least it gives nice ways to check one’s work. #mtbos #iteachmath #subtraction
