"The strength of WHOI's science is in its people."

It was true in the time of our first director, Henry Bigelow—and it's true today. We wouldn't be leaders in ocean science + engineering without our dedicated + talented staff.

🌋 How do scientists monitor volcanoes that we can’t see inside? Volcanoes are powerful and unpredictable, but geophysics gives us a window into the hidden processes deep underground.

📽️Learn more about how we use geophysics to monitor volcanic hazards in this new video!

This is a REALLY big deal. A huge amount of volcanic activity in the world happens beneath the sea where we can't see it, and often don't know it's happening. This is only the third time we have *ever* seen a submarine eruption, and the first at a mid-ocean ridge. AMAZING stuff.
**BIG NEWS in the geology world!** For the first time, scientists spotted an active eruption along the mid-ocean ridge!!

They visited the hydrothermal vent the day before, where a vibrant ecosystem thrived in the sweltering water. The next day, everything was gone. ⚒️🧪

Mining companies, after years pretending science-driven ‘sustainable’ deep-sea mining hope to team up with the Trump administration to circumvent mining regulations and put aside science. It was always about profits & never about the environment. Greenwashing it was.

Axial seamount, off the Oregon coast, is getting ready to erupt (again) in 2025. The most well instrumented under sea volcano has reached similar inflation as when it erupted (as predicted at that time) in 2015. Real time data is online for anyone to see! ⚒️🧪🌋
