Donald Trump’s sway within his own party appears to be ebbing, @jonlemire.bsky.social reports. Losing absolute loyalty from Republicans “would be the first step toward losing power—and relevancy,” one administration official told Lemire:
The Trump Steamroller Is Broken
Infighting. Bad polls. Party divisions. Midterm fears. It’s all back.

In contrast to dire predictions, a 4% surtax on incomes over $1 million in Massachusetts has created a $5.7 billion windfall.

25 years of "elimination status" for measles in the U.S. will likely be gone in January. 🥺
"Heck of a job, Bobby."

"If the outbreaks cannot be extinguished by January, the anniversary of the first cases in Texas, the United States will lose what is known as “elimination status” as determined by the World Health Organization."

The Epstein files were the most important issue in the world for Republicans—until they weren’t, Adam Serwer argues.
The President Who Cried ‘Hoax’
Republicans went after Epstein only when it was politically useful.

"I shudder to think of the outright criminality that Trump and his allies could resort to during the 2026 midterms, much less the 2028 presidential election. One doesn’t have to imagine wild fantasies of a Trump third term to imagine systemic abuses of power to suppress or miscount dissenting votes"

Four months ago, President Trump blocked the release of the Epstein files. Yesterday's disclosure of thousands of Epstein emails showed why.

Trump and his allies had promised to release the files before the 2024 election. He then reversed course in July.
Epstein files become a fiasco of Trump's own making
Trump's reaction to the Epstein scandal is window into how he handles major controversies that invite criticism about his leadership.

A penny not made is 3.69 cents earned.

Take that, Benjamin Franklin!
After 232 years, the U.S. Mint has retired the penny.

The end of its production comes amid a years-long farce of the government producing coins that cost more to make than they are worth. https://wapo.st/47DdYAZ

To understand the future of the Donald Trump opposition, look to the Democrats’ decision to reopen the government, not to last week’s elections, @dgraham.bsky.social argues in The Atlantic Daily:
The Shutdown Vote Was the Real Test for Democrats
The decision to reopen the government revealed how the party plans to contend with the challenges posed by Trump.

Democrats win if they use an affordability message.
The Democratic Party’s winners this week “arguably got more out of affordability than any other approach,” @dkthomp.bsky.social argues. A party that adopts that approach at the national level “is in a strong position going into 2026”:
Democrats Have a New Winning Formula
Each candidate arguably got more out of affordability than any other approach.
