Very friendly letter from Crick to Franklin, April 1954, discussing work, helping her arrange a trip to the USA, and hoping to see her soon in the US or back in the UK. His sign-off – 'Yours ever' – was reserved for his closest friends.

For another year, it appears, this article I wrote with @nccomfort.bsky.social is the most read of @nature.com's News articles...
What Rosalind Franklin truly contributed to the discovery of DNA’s structure
Franklin was no victim in how the DNA double helix was solved. An overlooked letter and an unpublished news article, both written in 1953, reveal that she was an equal player.

Shameless Self-Promotion Dept: This piece @matthewcobb.bsky.social and I wrote (author order determined by flip of Rosalind Franklin 50p coin) was the most read article in @nature.com News & Comment in 2023 — and again in 2025!

Very thankful for smart, generous colleagues I get to work with.

Please don’t stop the music: A meta-analysis of the cognitive and academic benefits of instrumental musical training in childhood and adolescence. Educational Research Review, 35, 100436.

#OnThisDay in 1859, Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species was first published.

Much of the original manuscript was used as scrap paper by Darwin's children. On the back of this painting of a house is an original manuscript page from Origin!

James D. Watson is dead. Stay tuned for some thoughts, based on my research on his biography, to be published soon.
While I write that up, y'all can throw tomatoes at this if you like. But I will offer a more nuanced take.

Now that the dust is settling, read this excellent thread - the opposite of a hot take - by Watson’s biographer (out in a year or so!) You’ll see how complicated a 97 year life can be.
Okay, here are some first reflections on Watson.
Watson's life is a tragedy, really of Shakespearean proportions. He did not, as most bios will tell you, do one great thing when he was young and then collect laurels for it for the next 60 years. His career arc was unlike any in science.

Oh dear. More worries about the consequences of CRISPR. The basic step - cutting both strands of DNA, which are then repaired, is not anodyne and has lasting effects.
Repair of DNA double-strand breaks leaves heritable impairment to genome function
Upon DNA breakage, a genomic locus undergoes alterations in three-dimensional chromatin architecture to facilitate signaling and repair. Although cells possess mechanisms to repair damaged DNA, it is ...

Very sad to hear about Jim Watson’s death. If you think he was always a racist you are wrong. He refused to support genes/IQ research in the 70s. He boycotted Greece because of the military coup in 1967 and he called for a boycott of meetings in Chicago after the police riot of 1968. 1/2

Here's Sydney Brenner, talking on BBC TV to Raymond Baxter about molecular biology in 1960. Behind him are some of the exhibits made for the 1958 Brussels Expo (l-r: TMV, polio, DNA). The polio structure was supervised by Rosalind Franklin, who died before the Expo took place.
