That's amazing. With Amtrak you always have to pay extra for flexible tickets and then its not uncommon for trains to be sold out. And outside of regional commuter rail, anything more frequent than 6 hours is a dream.

One of the trains I rode last year had very old rolling stock. While the seats get reupholstered, the color scheme in the bathrooms made me think it was likely to be 50 years old or more. Can't wait to ride the upgraded trains @alanthefisher.bsky.social shows here.

That's a great book - lots of cool ideas in there.

Once I got the state involved, suddenly they were able to understand that it was a medical coding mistake. Outside pressure makes a huge difference. Hope you feel better soon.

I don't know what state you are in, but you likely have an insurance regulatory body that can help. I had an insurer refuse to pay for preventative care for supremely stupid reasons. I wasted so much time on the phone trying to explain that acid reflux and colorectal cancer screenings are unrelated.

When moderates accept a position on the right edge of their personal Overton window, it validates that the right edge of that window can move further right. When liberals reject that strategic position, how mean! Liberals are bad! Moderates then pull the left edge of their window to the right.
February 16, 2026 at 5:36 PM
This is a great thread. I would add that there is a lot of Overton window gamesmanship where conservatives and moderates often pretend to be less in agreement with the far right when in polite company. Accept that strategic position or reject it, either way there is a reason to move to the right.
Ultimately, Klein’s approach is predicated on a) the idea that they don’t really mean it when they say they won’t accept a pluralistic society, and/or b) the assumption they only got to that point because Libs weren’t nice enough and that can be reversed by being more understanding. That’s nonsense.

Apparently Kings Circle Church is bringing in a Pray The Gay Away guest lecturer at the end of the month because the good lord has instructed them to never just mind their own damn business.

How to compliment a weak-sauce Democrat when they stand up for something:
Sen. Maggie Hassan, I won't apologize for what I've said about you but that discussion with Todd Lyons was pretty awesome. Thank you for that. I still kinda hope you lose your keys in your purse & it causes you a brief panic before you find them. Some of your votes just ain't it. But THAT was GREAT.

Also, since when do you need an ID to board a train? I rode Amtrak couple weeks ago and they didn't even card me to buy beer in the cafe car.

I had a client once who was furious that our invoicing system would email him late-payment reminders. The indignation over getting emails, while we were working without getting paid on time, was just unreal. Some people are too entitled, and they end up losing their support teams.

It's interesting that they only use them on the specific place names, but consistently omit the ʻokina in Hawaiʻi. There's some logic there though. Hawaii is a U.S. state and the federal government does not use diacriticals in references to the state. USGS is great about it in every other context.

If you live near an asian store like Daiso, they have little egg timers that go right in the boiling water and change color to help get the eggs just how you like them. I still struggle with peeling soft boiled eggs reliably, but this gets them cooked perfect.

I didn't need to double the garlic in this recipe, but I kinda do all the time anyway. We grow a variety called Music from Territorial Seeds that has huge bulbs up to a quarter pound, so when a recipe calls for a clove, some of ours are huge. These ended up very garlic flavored.

While this account will remain primarily focused on soup, I do enjoy salads as well, and have been eating a lot lately. So tonight we made croutons from homemade Italian sweet bread and garlic. They came out really crunchy!
