For some of you it’s heat and traffic.
For some it’s rain tapping your window.
For some it’s a café, a corner store, a borrowed quiet.

Different places.
Same pause.

Wherever you’re standing—
hope the day loosens its grip for a sec.

We had our regular Christmas Day feast, from our friends at China Delight, but takeaway this year since a couple of us have a touch of a cold. A pro tip for ordering from them, you can order most dishes and substitute the fat chow fun noodles instead of rice.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Bye buddy, hope you find your dad!

This thankfully never materialized. I don't think wind got above about 5 or 10 mph all day. Just a beautiful calm day. The NAM model got up to 84 mph gusts at one point but was considerably lower this morning.
I'm not sure I'm ready for another extended power outage since it has only been 5 days since the last one, but the forecast has 44mph wins to the north with gusts up to 78 mph, at least on the NAM model -- the others look less serious.

I would contend that my house is actually cleaner than those of most families who don't have an 18-year old dog, because they don't use carpet shampoo and a steam mop every day like we do.

A few days ago, I got so mad about the proposed restrictions of care for transgender people, that I decided it was time. One of my classmates is an anti-trans academic who co-authored Trump/RFK Jr.s HHS report on gender dysphoria. Moti Gorin doesn't post his "gender critical" stuff on FB.

Today is a good day to put a little something for your postal carrier in the mailbox. Our carrier is named Missy and she's a hero! She saved a neighbors life with CPR when he collapsed in the driveway.

This is a really neat video from @sarahtaber.bsky.social on why we don't cook a goose for Christmas anymore, along with the history and economics of farming. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJSP...

The dude in this story claiming that AI hallucinations have "started to sort of decrease exponentially over the past few years" -- if that was true they'd be near zero by now, right?

32 hours and we are back in business.
We had a significant windstorm and lost power again. Pacific Power has a wildly ineffective outage monitoring system that has thousands of active outages and seemingly random notifications and predictions for when service will be restored.

I'm lender critical. You'd better display that APR up-front, and not just in the fine print.
I'm Bender critical. But I'm not kissing his shiny metal ass.

USPS Informed Delivery is not supposed to be depressing, but sometimes that's how you find out that your wife's cousin's cat has passed away, because his name has been Sharpie redacted from the Snoopy holiday Christmas return address labels.

NEW RULE:

Once you setup your holiday out-of-office auto-response, you do not get to send any email requests to anyone. You are on holiday. Act like it and stop working. I don't want a copy of your holiday itinerary every time I answer a question you asked while you are supposed to be on vacation!

I played 3+ hours of pickleball today, and my wife is making nabe for dinner. It's a bottomless hotpot, and one of my all time favorite dinners. Sumo wrestlers eat lots of nabe to build muscle, so hopefully it works for pickleball players too.

The Brass Monkey restaurant downtown has truffle fries with enough garlic to count as a dietary supplement. If your digestive system can handle such things, I highly recommend.

Picking iambic pentameter as your example of unnecessary knowledge is just a very sad choice. As my father is fond of saying, "Education is the only business where you can cheat the customer and they like it."
This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.

I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

I didn’t know what to say, so I said, “Thank you for your service.”

I switched to Tidal for music streaming in May and have listened to 2400 separate artists since then. They tell me I'm the 21st biggest fan of @vintzdesert.bsky.social. Anyway, Tidal is dope, and you should cancel your Spotify because the CEO is trying to build SkyNet.

The Corvallis subreddit has a weekly meltdown thread where everyone posts random complaints in all caps. Someone posted this amazing gem describing perfectly what it feels like to December in Oregon.
