Who doesn't live a Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis), this one foraging on the beach.

I think this is a Chinese Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis), at Minsmere RSPB in the early morning.

Any ideas what this bird is, seen at Minsmere RSPB at the beginning of the month? At the time I thought it looked like a sandpiper, still unsure what kind or if it is something completely different, sadly very distant and poor pictures!

More from Suffolk. A Black-tailed Godwit in the early morning sunshine, having a muddy breakfast.

I have found some time to start sorting through photos I took last weekend, in Suffolk. Starting with a Spotted redshank (Tringa erythropus)

A Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix) on the beach at Burghead, on the Moray Firth, Scotland. (Being so far south, it is probably a hybrid, x Carrion Crow, but looks good.)

A Slavonian [Horned] Grebe (Podiceps auritus) on a Scottish loch, looking angry! (Or just looking for some food, coincidentally facing directly towards me, showing off his fiery horns.)

I don't just take photos of birds (only ~90%), and here is a Mountain Hare (Lepus timidus) to prove it 😆 Taken on high moorland in the Cairngorms.

It's not a surprise to see Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) in the snow in the Cairn Gorm Base Station car park! (No, that is not dust on the sensor 😆)

Final surprise from Scotland (for today) was a distant Hen harrier (Circus cyaneus) hunting over a grouse moor. We watched it for many minutes, but it never came very close. Hopefully it didn't think we were there to persicute it.

Another Scottish surprise. Driving along a loch, as it was too wet to walk, my daughter (who should know better) said what's that odd duck? It was a Black-throated Diver/Loon (Gavia arctica).

Bohemian waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus) were a surprising find in Scotland. The only ones I have seen this year. We stopped to look over Cromarty Firth for grebes and ducks when they flew out of a tree to drink from a puddle before returning to eat.

One from brighter, warmer times. A Red grouse (Lagopus scotica) in Scotland earlier this year.

Hi, #SuffolkBirding / #SuffolkBirds / @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

I will be in Lowestoft for a few days at the end of the month. I will visit Minsmere, but are there any other unmissable birding sites? Somewhere with photogenic subjects waiting to have pictures taken would be a bonus 😀

A bonus Dartmoor bird, a Marsh tit (Poecile palustris). It's the first one this year that has stayed around long enough for a snap but, alas, it would not turn around.

A trip to Devon would not be the same without a trip to Dartmoor. A trip to Dartmoor would not be the same without seeing a White-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus) on the River Dart!

I love photographing European stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) because even when they fly away, they usually return a few seconds later. This pair were at Dawlish Warren.

Another Devon photo, from Brixham Harbour breakwater. This time, a Purple sandpiper (Calidris maritima) that was taken in the twilight after sunset! I love modern cameras.

Another photo from Devon. A European rock pipit (Anthus petrosus) on Brixham Harbour breakwater. I think I like the rock as much as the pipit :-)

I thought I would post some photos from a holiday in Devon, last month.

We found the Long-billed dowitcher (Limnodromus scolopaceus) at Bowling Green Marsh, hiding behind some Common redshank.
