Three river otters observed near the Big Lagoon, Humboldt County boat ramp on 11-2-2025
While we were out drifting for halibut, a group several small Mola molas came by. This individual seems to be soliciting the sea gulls to pick parasites from its skin. One female gull does by the end of the video. This is a verified symbiotic relationship between the gulls and the fish.

With all the turmoil that’s going on it’s important to celebrate things that bring you great joy. Today I did my happy dance. I got underwater video documenting a coho salmon young-of-the-year in an urban creek near our house. I am thrilled to see these fish in this stream. Here’s the video.

Here's video of a coho young-of-the-year (YOY) that we observed on our April 23 survey. I’m confident with this species ID because of the white stripe on the leading edges of the dorsal and anal fins. My thanks to Eric Stockwell for including me on these surveys. I continue to learn so much.
This video is from one of our 2025 young-of-the-year (YOY) surveys. I can identify the coho and steelhead YOY. Chinook YOY may be present but it’s difficult to differentiate them from steelhead. I'm still learning! I'm grateful to Eric Stockwell for including me on these surveys. #nature #Humboldt
