Old piece from 2005. Took the initial photo at Eastern State Pen. Relied more on the photo for the entire work then just using it as a base to build on. Still think it's pretty ok.

A selection of haunting encounters I have had with folk horror creatures and ghosts during walks in the British countryside.

You will find the full descriptions of these disturbing incidents in the alt text.

1. Weeping Fence Banshee.
I had heard lots of stories about Maureen The Tea-Loving Fence Banshee in my village but, until the day I took this photo, always dismissed them as the gossip of overimaginative pensioners with too much time on their hands. Hearing the sound of ghostly weeping as we walked down the bridleway, my friend Andrew and I approached this forlorn figure with great trepidation, our hope diminishing with every step that what we could see was merely a creatively discarded shawl and hat and what we could hear was just the wind whistling through the abandoned railway carriages nearby. The situation only became more frightening when, after introducing herself formally and flashing us a mouthful of broken teeth, "Maz" - as she invited us to call her - proceeded to track us for another mile, hopping on her one fencepost leg, waving a 1980s Morphy Richards old kettle at us, and wailing "Does anyone fancy a cup of tea?" until, finally, we managed to give her the slip by nipping into the village pub on the pretext of getting a pint, then swiftly out of an emergency exit I'd scoped out a few weeks early in preparation for sticky moments (an example of folk horror rambler's pre-planning which had seemed neurotic to even me at the time I did it but I was now extremely glad of).

A foggy stroll over the solstice last week. If you like fog, gloom, and old graveyards you might want to stick around.
