April 19, 2025 is the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing. Democrats in Congress should organize a ceremony on the steps of the US Capitol honoring the lives of federal employees killed by right wing anti-government extremists on that day, and invite their GOP colleagues to join them.

It’s obvious that Trump will pay for tax cuts by running up the national debt, which he has no fear of defaulting on. In 2016, he said on CNBC that as president he would find ways to renegotiate the public debt and pay less than 100 cents on the dollar if the economy went bad.

“I've borrowed knowing that you can pay back with discounts. I would borrow knowing that if the economy crashed, you could make a deal.” Trump ran his businesses by stiffing creditors and will give those holding treasury bonds “haircuts,” even though it would wreck the nation’s credit rating.

While disrupting Trump’s speech in its entirely is not a good idea, the Democrats must physically communicate to the public that things are not normal, otherwise they are complicit in Trump’s efforts to make everything appear normal. Trump’s speech is theatre and the Democrats are props.

Democrats must not allow Trump to make things seem normal in his Tuesday night speech. Suggest that they stand up and give Trump an ovation so long that he cannot give speech, even if it takes all night. Never been a filibuster in a state of the union speech but there’s always a first time.

Musk’s cuts reduce federal dollars to every congressional district. Democrats and independents need to keep a tally of this, district by district, and inform voters in Republican districts of exactly how much money their congressman’s support for Musk is costing their district.

If the feds under Trump & GOP Congress cut funding for public education, transportation, & social services, states whose citizens want & need these services will have to pay more. Last year MA voters approved a fairer way of covering this than raising sales taxes and other regressive measures.

Historically, progressives have supported a powerful federal government over “states rights.” Now it’s time to pivot and stop the feds from interfering in states passing stronger laws to protect the environment, consumers, and LGBTQ and reproductive rights.

Trump attacked Biden and Harris for never firing anyone. Biden certainly should have fired his political and communications advisors in 2023 when his popularity continued to plummet, and Harris should have fired the same sorry crew as soon as she got the nomination. Might have made a difference.
