Downy #woodpecker female - hand feeding birds at Kensington Metropark. I love when she picked sunflowers from the creases of my fingers! #birds

Blue Jay #birds enjoying seeds and suet bites. Our jays are not feeder bullies at all, they stop by once or twice per day at most. #birding #BackyardBirds

Something happened to the last friendly #chipmunk. Now we have only 1 near the house. It took 2 weeks to slowly earn her trust. Even then, she is cautious, but comes at my call. She may have 2 burrows and maybe took old Chip's stores.

Pileated #woodpeckers : Father and son!!! We had the honor of witnessing their first day out together two weeks ago, along with Mama, and they specifically hopped on this front yard to show their boy the feeders. He practiced chopping fallen logs. Growing so fast!! #birds #BackyardBirds #birding

Now that the weather is well above freezing, the bluebirds are not so friendly with each other. The maximum occupancy of a feeder seems to be 3, not 10, as before. #birds #birding #birdwatching #birdphotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature #naturephotography #bluebirds

The edge of the baffle is serrated from little bite sized chunk removals. I admire the perseverance and planning ability of the squirrel. We had to raise it because a fresh young one outsmarted it. Also an easy way to distinguish individual #squirrels is by their ears - spacing, angle, shape etc

Poor early Robin 😭 we took peanut suet off from the cage feeder so he could eat something. There was a second but this one chased it in the afternoon before we figured out how to feed them. Don't know if it ever returned #BackyardBirding #birds #birding

Our little friend Sidewinder. Some prior injury makes her straighten her spine while eating. I saw her fall 35 feet last month, no rehab would respond or accept her. She comes every day for food. We think she's older, she's experienced, she can hold her own. We love her but want to help her pain

Last photo I have of Red Head. He's gone again. There was a hawk in our yard the last hour I saw him. I chased it off but I think it either got him or he bailed on the area. It had just thawed this week, frigid weekend. Every day I hope to see him but it's been 4 days. Not looking good

"Our" Middle Spotted #Woodpecker can now be seen quite regularly, and he has even started to "sing" his somewhat idiosyncratic mating "song" 🎶 🥰.
Have a great Saturday full of 🪶#birds

House finches love to nibble on the buds of cherry blossoms as they bloom 🌸

The result is that petals get scattered all over the ground around the base of the trees sometimes before the pollinators even get their chance 📷🪶

He's alive ♥️🤍🖤 He finally showed up two days ago in the afternoon. But he's very cold, doing everything to protect body heat. Hope the cold lets up soon. We're ready for winter to be over. #BackyardBirding #birds #woodpeckers #birding

Wild #birding is not always fun. We haven't seen Sad Wing in a month. I don't think she's alive anymore. This is the last photo I have of her. She used to stop by every day for peanuts. It's been 4 days since I last saw Red Headed Woodpecker. I hope he just went south but I have a bad feeling.

The White Breasted nuthatches finally trust me when I'm outside, but they won't fly up to the window feeders if we're too close. Sometimes I swear they do borderline UAP maneuvers when aborting trajectory. By far the best fliers of the mixed species flock. #BackyardBirds #birding #birds

The moody and majestic Red Headed #Woodpecker sneaks peeks at us on the window feeder ♥️ We are right on the edge of their year round range. He's not very picky about food - he seems to like suet and sunflower seeds the most. #BackyardBirds #birding
