This photo by Doisneau invariably makes me think of a cartoon by Sempé: exactly the same gentle humour that pokes fun at the insignificance of our lives

After her hommage to Lovecraft (published in English as The Monstrous Dreams of Mr. Providence), Daria Schmitt took 2 years to complete this tale about the incredible journey of René Descartes’s skull. Smart, witty, wonderful, and a feast for the eyes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful Doisneau exhibition at La Boverie in Liège. What an eye.

Verwacht aantal bezoekers: 40.000!

Soli Deo Gloria is a masterpiece of French comics. Edouard Cour’s graphics are a sight to behold, while the story about the musical twins is both grim and profoundly moving.

Silent Jenny by Mathieu Babet was 5 years in the making and weighs in at 311 pages. It’s a triumph. Best French comic I’ve read this year.

Ben Machell’s Chasing the Dark gives an overview of the history of paranormal investigation, largely based on the life and archives of Tony Cornell. It’s a balanced and very readable account. I love the cover design.

Nicholas J. Higham spends 400 pages on finding out whether King Arthur is a historical figure or not. Spoiler alert: he’s not (which doesn’t exactly come as a surprise). Interesting, though, to see the historian’s mind at work, eliminating false leads.

Huge fan of @davemckean.bsky.social The Nitrate portfolio is out of this world. Amazing print quality, eye-popping art. And yet, despite all the attention to detail, no one pointed out the typo in the subtitle? Grauens not Grauns…

Can horrible people be great artists? Of course, they can. Emil Nolde desperately wanted to join the NSDAP. Instead, the Nazis declared him a degenerate artist, imposing a Berufsverbot on him, which he later used to claim he was a Nazi victim and become a prominent member of German society again.

The War Museum in Vienna has the best motto: ‘War belongs in the Museum’. I couldn’t agree more. Painting: ‘Soldier and Death’ by Hans Larwin (1873-1938).

The Brussels Comics Museum (the building - designed by Horta - in itself is reason enough to visit) has an impressive temporary exhibition about Claude Renard. He only made four comic albums, but what a talent! Don’t miss it if you’re visiting Brussels.

Otto Friedrich’s brilliant Before the Deluge is as worth reading now as it was in 1973. Hitler was right about one thing: “The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous.” (Mein Kampf) We have learnt nothing.

Jeremy Bastian’s Cursed Pirate Girl - Malodious Mutiny is sheer, glorious, barking madness. According to Penguin Random House the age range for this book is 5 to 9 years. Some of the author’s lunacy must have infected the publisher’s website.

Catherine Nixey’s Heresy is a useful reminder that Christians’ current image of Jesus is only one of many that existed in the first few centuries after his death, and that the dominant view only emerged by sheer luck. Also that intolerance is at the core of Christian belief. Great read.

It was a great privilege to scrutinize 150 magnificent posters of Laurent Durieux up close in the Stavelot Abbey (Belgium). The exhibition runs until 11 January 2026. Not to be missed!
